RMU Women’s Lacrosse Falls Short in Hard-Fought Battle Against Binghamton

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – The RMU women's lacrosse team suffered a 15-9 loss to the Binghamton Bearcats on Saturday afternoon in Moon Township to fall to 2-5 on the season.
 
FIRST HALF
After a weather delay pushed back the first draw, the Binghamton Bearcats' offense came out hot to begin the delayed game with four unanswered goals to make it 4-0 with 7:46 left in the first half, forcing an RMU timeout. Coming out of the timeout, the Bearcats tacked on another goal to make it 5-0 at 5:15 before the contest entered another rain delay due to inclement weather. The Bearcats scored two more in the first quarter, coming out of the weather delay, to make it 7-0 at the end of the first quarter.
 
RMU's offense came alive just twenty seconds into the second quarter as Mia Berthoff found the back of the net to get the Colonials on the scoreboard. Back-to-back goals by Gabi Puzevic, including a free-position goal, cut the Bearcats' lead down to just four, with RMU trailing 7-3 with 11:10 left in the half. The Colonials recorded their fourth unanswered goal on a Taylor Burkett goal at 9:47. A goal by the Bearcats Carla Curth at 3:12 ended the Colonials' 4-0 run, making it 8-4. Binghamton closed out the quarter with a goal in the final 10-seconds to make it 9-4 at the end of the half.
 
SECOND HALF
The third quarter featured seven goals, four from Binghamton and three from RMU. Binghamton opened up the quarter with four unanswered goals to make it 13-4, before the Colonials' offense went on a 3-0 run of their own to close out the quarter. RMU first struck at 2:57 on a Jade Doldo goal. The Colonials struck again 50 seconds later as Samantha Brothers scored a man-up goal off an assist from Berthoff. Doldo closed the third quarter scoring with her second goal of the contest to make it 13-7 at the end of the third quarter.
 
Lea Otts got the Colonials going in the final frame on a man-up goal off an assist from Madison Prietz to make it 13-8 with 12:38 to go. The Colonials made it 13-9 on a goal from Greta Burns off an assist from Samantha Brothers at 7:37. The Bearcats responded with a free-position goal at 3:27 to end the Colonials 2-0 run. A free-position goal by Binghamton with 1:10 on the clock made it 15-9 to close out the contest.
 
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE
Seven different Colonials found the back of the net in the loss with Gabi Puzevic and Jade Doldo leading the way with two. The other Colonials to score were Samantha Brothers, Mia Berthoff, Taylor Burkett, Lea Otts, and Greta Burns. Recording assists on the night were Madison Prietz, Otts, Berthoff, and Brothers. Prietz also recorded a team-high six draw controls and four groundballs while Brothers recorded four caused turnovers, four groundballs, and two draw controls.
 
In goal, Katrina Bottomley earned the start and was tagged with the loss allowing five goals while recording one save. Lucy Carney came on in relief, allowing 10 goals while recording five saves.
 
As a team, RMU took 25 shots on the night, with 17 of them coming on goal. The Colonials were also 13-for-13 on clears and just 1-for-4 on free position shots.
 
For Binghamton, Emma Blloshmi led all scorers with five goals on the night.  In net Emily Backlin and Maeve Sayre split time with Backlin being credited with the win. Backlin recorded three saves while allowing seven goals. Sayre came on in relief, recording five saves while allowing just two goals.
 
UP NEXT
The Colonials will open up MAC play with a road matchup against Central Michigan next Saturday in Mount Pleasant, Michigan. First draw is scheduled for noon.
