Madison Sievering, the RMU women's soccer team defeated Canisius, 3-1, Thursday afternoon to earn its first win of the 2026 season. The Colonials improve to 1-2 overall.
FIRST HALF
Canisius came out with several chances in the opening seven minutes, recording three shots and five corner kicks, but RMU's defense held firm and settled in.
In the 14th minute, the Golden Griffins' goalkeeper turned the ball over just outside the 18-yard box. Mella stole the ball away and calmly slotted a shot into the back of the net to score RMU's first goal of the season.
Moments later, Canisius appeared to find the equalizer, but a foul was called on the play, waving off the goal. RMU took its 1-0 advantage into halftime.
SECOND HALF
Just 10 minutes into the second half, Canisius tied the game on a well-placed shot from Maggie Cregan.
Less than 15 minutes later, RMU regained the lead off a corner kick. Sievering sent the ball into the box, where Mella headed a shot toward goal. After the Canisius goalkeeper made the initial save, Cucchetti was there to put home the rebound and give the Colonials a 2-1 advantage.
RMU added an insurance goal in the 86th minute off another set piece.
Ava Trethewey sent a cross into the box that found Sievering, who finished the chance for her first goal as a Colonial and secured the 3-1 victory.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Canisius outshot RMU, 15-8, including an 8-5 advantage in shots on goal.
- The Golden Griffins earned 10 corner kicks, while the Colonials had five.
- RMU was whistled for 11 fouls, compared to 10 for Canisius.
- Shauna Gamble, Fiona Fraser and Sierra Hess each played all 90 minutes.
COLONIAL FIRSTS
Goalkeeper
Emma Cameron earned her first victory of the season, making six saves in net.
Cucchetti scored her first career goal for RMU. The senior midfielder now has three career goals.
Freshman
Morgan Gesinski made her collegiate debut. The Mount Pleasant, Pa., native played 50 minutes in the contest.
MULTIPOINT PERFORMANCES
Sievering recorded her first goal as a Colonial and the 10th of her career. With an assist on Cucchetti's goal, she tallied her fourth career multipoint performance.
Mella recorded the first goal and assist of her RMU career, marking her second career multipoint performance.
UP NEXT
RMU returns home for a four-game homestand, beginning with its home opener Thursday, August 27, against Mercyhurst. Kickoff is set for 4:00 PM at the North Athletic Complex.
