MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – Mercyhurst scored in the 79th minute to steal away a 1-0 victory over RMU Thursday afternoon at the North Athletic Complex. The Colonials are now 1-3 to begin the 2026 campaign.
FIRST HALF
RMU nearly opened the scoring early, as
Morgan Gesinski registered two shots in the opening minutes, but both attempts were denied by the Mercyhurst goalkeeper.
Following the early chances, the remainder of the half was primarily played in the midfield.
In the 42nd minute, Mercyhurst nearly broke through as a shot looked to trickle across the goal line, but
Shauna Gamble was there to clear the ball away and keep the game scoreless heading into halftime.
SECOND HALF
With the game still scoreless, the Colonials came out firing in the second half, registering five shots in the opening seven minutes but were unable to find the back of the net.
In the 79th minute, the Lakers finally broke through as Jenna Popowski sent a shot from distance into the net to give Mercyhurst a 1-0 advantage.
RMU continued to push for the equalizer over the final 10 minutes.
Madison Sievering had one shot denied before another attempt from distance hit the woodwork.
With just a minute remaining,
Ava Trethewey appeared to have chipped the Mercyhurst goalkeeper to tie the game, but a Lakers defender cleared the ball away to preserve the 1-0 victory.

Morgan Gesinski earned her first career start Thursday. The Mount Pleasant, Pa. native played a season-high 78 minutes and recorded four shots, including two on goal.
