Colonials Take First Road Trip of 2026 to Canisius

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – The RMU men's soccer team will hit the road for the first time in 2026 when it travels to Buffalo, N.Y., to take on Canisius Sunday, August 23. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:00 PM at the Demske Sports Complex. The game will stream live on the Golden Griffins Broadcast Network.
 
RMU LATELY
RMU (0-1) is coming off a 2-1 loss to Drexel in its home opener Thursday afternoon. The Colonials struck first when Riley Cotton converted a penalty kick, but the Dragons responded with a penalty kick of their own before scoring the game-winning goal with under three minutes remaining.
 
Senior goalkeeper Josh Lane stopped a penalty kick and finished the contest with three saves.
 
Seven transfers made their official RMU debuts against Drexel, including Oscar Bech, Abdul Kamara, Anelson Azard, Giovanni Dennis, Callum Doyle-Travers, Nicholas Samways and Van Schmid Georges.
 
Freshmen Aiden Bernklau-Wostl, Jonah Geike and Joaquin Fazal also made their collegiate debuts while earning their first career starts. Freshman Brady Eubanks made his first career appearance, while junior Stanley Kinch earned his first career start.
 
ALL-TIME VS. CANISIUS
RMU holds a 10-6-3 all-time record against Canisius dating back to 1991. The Colonials have recorded seven shutouts against the Golden Griffins, including a 4-3-1 mark when playing in Buffalo.
 
In the most recent meeting, RMU earned a commanding 5-1 victory. Chase Gilley scored twice, while Logan Gilley, John Paul Mbuthia and Anass Hadran each found the back of the net. Lane played the first 66 minutes in goal and recorded one save.
 
SCOUTING THE GOLDEN GRIFFINS
Canisius (0-1) opened its season on the road, falling 1-0 to Le Moyne. The Dolphins recorded four shots on goal compared to one for the Golden Griffins, while five yellow cards were issued between the two teams.
 
Last season, Canisius finished 5-10-1 overall and 3-7 in Metro Conference play. The Golden Griffins return three of their four top point producers from a season ago in Romero Nicolazzo (3g, 2a), Gianni Angaran (2g, 2a) and Noah Baumslag (1g, 3a).
 
Sophomore defender Henrique Dias also returns after leading the team with 1,359 minutes played last season.
 
COMMON OPPONENTS
Three of Canisius' next four opponents are also on RMU's 2026 schedule. The Golden Griffins will next face Horizon League member Cleveland State before taking on Mercyhurst and St. Bonaventure.
 
RMU will face Mercyhurst and St. Bonaventure in September before traveling to Cleveland State at the end of October.
 
UP NEXT
RMU returns home for a pair of games next week, hosting Waynesburg Thursday, August 27 at 1:00 PM before welcoming Duquesne Sunday, August 30 at 4:00 PM. Both games will stream live on ESPN+.
