Student-Athlete Employment Guidelines

A few reminders…

  • Student-athletes may be employed at any time as long as they are being compensated for work actually performed and at a rate commensurate with the going rate in the local area for similar services (12.4.1).
  • A student-athlete may not be compensated because of his/her reputation or fame as a student-athlete.
  • Student-athletes may also receive compensation for providing fee-for-lesson instruction.
  • Coaches and athletic department staff members may assist student-athletes in finding a job; however, all jobs must be legitimate employment opportunities and may not be created or reserved solely for the student-athlete.

Employment

  • Prior to the start of employment (including employment at a summer camp or clinic), the student-athlete must complete the Student-Athlete Employment form in the Compliance Office.
  • The respective coach (or designee) must sign the employment form acknowledging the fact that the student-athlete will be employed. A signature will only be required for employment during the academic year. Summer employment does not require a signature.
  • If the student-athlete’s employment changes throughout the year, a new form must be completed.
  • Compliance will keep a record of all employment and send occasional rules education information to various employers.

Fee-for-Lesson

Student-Athletes may provide a fee-for-lesson given the following criteria. Remember, each lesson must be recorded and reported to the Compliance Office via the Employment Form.

  • Institutional facilities may not be used.
  • Playing lessons are not permitted (e.g. round of golf, tennis match).
  • Compliance must have a file documentation of the recipient of the lesson and the fee provided.
  • Compensation must be paid by the lesson recipient or family.
  • Instruction must be similar to that of a private lesson if there is more than one person receiving the lesson.
  • Student-athlete may not use his or her name, picture or appearance to promote or advertise the available fee-for-lesson instruction.
