Liam Cavanagh

Liam Cavanagh returns for his fourth season with the Robert Morris University Women’s Ice Hockey team, his first as an assistant coach with the program after previously serving as the Director of Hockey Operations for three years. 

Cavanagh is returning to the Colonials after most recently spending time with the Dalhousie University Tigers (USPORTS) as an assistant coach throughout the 2021/2022 seasons, alongside Team Canada's Olympic Head Coach, Troy Ryan. 

Cavanagh earned his BBA from Acadia University in 2017 with a focus in Marketing and Finance, followed by his Master’s of Science with a focus in Data Analytics and Nonprofit Leadership at Robert Morris University in 2019.

Cavanagh’s operational hockey career started at UMass Boston, where he was the Director of Hockey Operations for the Beacons Division III men’s hockey program for two seasons. During the 2015-16 season, Cavanagh was part of the staff that helped UMass Boston to its first conference regular season and tournament titles since 1982 and the program’s first NCAA Frozen Four appearance. Cavanagh also produced promotional materials to elevate the profile of UMass Boston men’s ice hockey and was part of the Beacons bench staff.
 
After his time at the University of Massachusetts, he took his abilities to Robert Morris to help elevate the Colonials to back-to-back CHA regular season titles in 2018 and 2019.
 
A native of Nova Scotia, he was also the founder and CEO of several startup companies including a sports apparel company that focused on charitable efforts rather than profit-making.

Cavanagh also founded a non-profit organization that was built to help professional and collegiate athletes understand the importance of a balanced lifestyle while maintaining and understanding the significance that mental health plays in everyday life. 
 
In his spare time, he has participated in many similar efforts as a volunteer with different Boys & Girls Clubs and Special Olympics, shelters and speaking engagements around North America.

Prior to his career on the business and coaching side of hockey, Cavanagh was a goaltender for Charles P. Allen High School and with junior programs in the MHL and NSJHL.

His coaching career began in 2009 with Finngoalie, a group that provides training for professional/elite goaltenders, where he excelled his coaching skills, drill development, and evaluation which has enabled him to work with elite goaltenders and players around the world through the summer months.
