Moon Township, Pa. - Freshman forward Lucky Jones (Newark, N.J. / St. Anthony) of the Robert Morris University men's basketball team was named to the 2012 CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Freshman All-America Team Tuesday.
Jones was one of 25 members of the squad in 2012 and is the third Colonial to earn the honor in school history. Former guards Jeremy Chappell (2005-09) and Karon Abraham (2009-11) were also named to the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Freshman All-America Team, with Chappell earning the accolade in 2006 and Abraham in 2010.
A member of the 2012 All-Northeast Conference Rookie Team, Jones averaged 8.5 points and 6.1 rebounds per game in 2011-12, leading the Colonials in rebounding. Jones compiled 213 caroms in his first season at RMU, the second highest total by a freshman in school history and trailing only former Colonial Anthony Dickens (1985-90), who established the freshman mark with 237 in 1985-86.
Jones was extremely effective down the stretch of the 2011-12 campaign, averaging 10.2 points and 6.3 rebounds while shooting 46 percent (23-for-50) from the field in his final six games, which included three games in the 2012 NEC Tournament and three more contests in the 2012 CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament.
The CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Freshman All-American team is awarded annually, and rather than selecting a first, second or third team as well as an honorable mention squad, the team consists of 25 student-athletes from mid-major conferences.
Led by second-year head coach Andrew Toole, Robert Morris tied school records for wins and road victories in 2011-12 with 26 and 14, respectively. The Colonials posted an overall record of 26-11 (.703), including a mark of 13-5 (.722) in the NEC.
RMU advanced to its fourth straight NEC Tournament championship game before falling at Long Island but earned a berth in the 2012 CIT, its fourth postseason appearance in the last five seasons. In the CIT, the Colonials advanced to the quarterfinals thanks to road wins at Indiana State and Toledo before falling at Fairfield.
Since the beginning of the 2007-08 season, Robert Morris has compiled an overall record of 117-56 (.676), establishing both school and league records for victories over a five-year span. RMU's 117 wins is tied for ninth with Kent State over that span for most wins by a mid-major program.
