Ithaca, N.Y. / Lynah Rink - Robert Morris University dropped a 4-1 decision to 13th-ranked Cornell University in men's hockey action at Lynah Rink Thursday night. The Colonials, now 1-3 on the year, were outshot 46-17 as junior netminder Christian Boucher (Orleans, Ontario / Cumberland Grads) made a season-high 42 saves.
Cornell (1-0) peppered the Robert Morris net with 16 shots in the first period, but Boucher was up to the task stopping every shot. The Big Red finally broke through midway through the second period. Michael Kennedy took a lead pass from Evan Barlow and beat Boucher to the glove side at 10:40.
Blake Gallagher made it 2-0 5:07 later with their only power play marker in 10 opportunities. Gallagher was alone on the right side of the net and flipped in a wrist shot for what would prove to be the gamewinning goal.
Junior forward Joel Gasper (Crookston, Minn. / Billings Bulls) cut the lead to 2-1 with his second goal of the season 3:26 into the final stanza. Junior forward Tom Biondich (International Falls, Minn. / Wichita Falls Rustlers) and sophomore Jason Towsley (Lasalle, Ontario / Leamington Flyers) picked up the assists.
Cornell regained the two-goal margin with 46 seconds left when Mitch Carefoot put away a rebound off a shot by Brendon Nash. Tyler Mugford added an empty-net goal in the game's final second to cap the scoring at 4-1.
The Big Red went 1-10 on the power play, the third time in four games the Colonials have been forced to kill off at least 10 power plays. Robert Morris was 0-5 with the man advantage. Troy Davenport took the win in net with 16 saves.
Robert Morris opens their College Hockey America schedule by hosting Niagara in a two-game series November 3-4. Both games start at 7:35 p.m. at the RMU Island Sports Center.
