Bemidji, Minn. / John S. Glas Fieldhouse - The Robert Morris University men's hockey team secured their first-ever win at the John Glas Fieldhouse knocking off College Hockey America preseason favorite Bemidji State 3-2. Senior Aaron Clarke (Peterborough, Ontario / Niagara University) led Robert Morris with a goal and two assists as the Colonials improve to 3-4-0 and 2-1-0 in conference play.
The Colonials first line of Clarke, senior Doug Conley (East Amherst, N.Y. / Tri-City Storm) and junior Ryan Cruthers (Farmingdale, N.Y. / Army) accounted for eight of the team's nine points on the night. Conley chipped in a goal and an assist with Cruthers earning an assist on all three of the team's goals. Sophomore Jason Towsley (Lasalle, Ontario / Leamington Flyers) had the Colonials other goal.
Clarke started the scoring late in the first period. Robert Morris broke into the Bemidji zone on a 3-on-1 break with Conley and Cruthers earning assists on Clarke's third marker of the year at 19:13 of the opening frame. Clarke has now scored six points in the last three games, including a goal in each of the last three games. He has three goals and three assists over that span. In seven games this season, the senior forward has a point in all but one game and leads Robert Morris 10 points this year.
The Colonials power-play, which went 1-7 on the night, stretched the lead to 2-0 at 11:03 of the second period. Towsley's fourth goal of the year with help from Cruthers and Clarke came just 23 second's into the team's third power play of the night.
Before the close of the middle stanza, Bemidji would cut the lead to one goal. Travis Winter scored at 18:19 on assist from Brandon Marino and Tyler Scofield to cut the lead to 2-1 heading into the third period.
Conley's goal 12:41 into the third period would prove to be the gamewinning goal. Again it was Cruthers and Clarke collecting the assists on Conley's first goal of 2006-07.
Rob Sirianni scored on a slapshot with 52 seconds left in regulation, but the Beavers couldn't find the equalizer in a 3-2 final score.
Robert Morris sophomore Christian Boucher (Orleans, Ontario / Cumberland Grads) finished with 27 saves while Bemidji's Matt Climie had 25 stops in the loss. The Beavers held a slim 29-28 advantage in shots while going 1-5 on the power play.
