Box Score Providence, RI - The Robert Morris University women's ice hockey team concluded their match-up with Providence in a 1-1 draw on Sunday afternoon at the Schneider Arena in Rhode Island.
Sophomore Brianne McLaughlin (Sheffield Village, Oh. / Ohio Flames) put on a clinic in net making 44 saves and earning the game's first star award for the second straight day.
Providence was picked eighth in the USCHO.com preseason polls conducted yearly at the beginning of the season.
After a hard fought scoreless first period of hockey, Providence lit up the scoreboard first with a power-play goal from Sarah Feldman 3:10 into the second period.
This would be the only goal the potent Friar offense could manage despite out shooting the Colonials 20-3 in the stanza. Robert Morris's defense stepped up to the occasion as the first line Colonial defense of Sophomore Samantha Ullrich (St. Louis, Mo. / Team Illinois U-19) and Freshman Mallory Giambra (Rochester, N.Y. / Rochester Edge) made two spectacular defensive saves robbing Providence of would-be goals taking the 1-0 deficit to the third.
It looked like déjà vu again in the third period as the blue line trio of Sophomore Alissa Dorman (Madison, Wisc. / Madison Capitals), Junior Maria Olausson (Copenhagen, Denmark / Danish Nat'l Team) and Sophomore Megan Picinic (Cliffside Park, N.J. / Princeton Tigerlillies) helped knot the game up at one a piece with less than ten minutes to play.
The trio accounted for the game-winning goal in the previous day's game against Vermont.
Dorman, who took a sharp pass from Olausson and Picinic, sent a blast to the right side of the net beating Friar goaltender Danielle Ciarletta for the score.
At the end of regulation both teams were deadlocked taking the game to overtime. The Colonials and Friars controlled the puck at center ice with both teams combining for three shots in the final five minutes ending the game in a 1-1 tie.
The Colonials (5-7-2) have the following weekend off for the holiday and return to action at the RMU Island Sports Center the following weekend hosting the number one team in Division I hockey and defending national champion Wisconsin on December 1-2 for a two-game series, game times are scheduled for 7:35 and 2:05 p.m.
