MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – RMU women's hockey head coach Logan Bittle has announced the promotion of Liam Cavanagh to Associate Head Coach ahead of the 2026-27 season.
 
The upcoming season marks Cavanagh's eighth year overall with the Colonials as he continues his second stint with the program. Since returning to Robert Morris, he has become an integral part of the program's leadership, helping guide its rebuilding efforts and establish the foundation for its continued growth. Cavanagh leads many of the program's recruiting and player-development initiatives, while contributing extensively to coaching strategy, video analysis, special teams, staff development, team culture and daily operations. Central to his approach is building meaningful relationships with student-athletes, understanding their individual goals and helping prepare them for success, whether their path leads to professional hockey or a career beyond the game.

During his first tenure with the Colonials, Cavanagh helped RMU compile a 57-34-14 overall record over three seasons. He was a member of the coaching staff that guided the Colonials to three consecutive appearances in the College Hockey America Championship game while capturing back-to-back CHA regular-season titles in 2018 and 2019.
 
Since returning to Robert Morris, Cavanagh has played a significant role in rebuilding the program with the student-athlete experience at the forefront. He has helped shape a recruiting philosophy centered on identifying talented players who align with RMU's culture, values and long-term vision. His influence extends throughout the program, from individual skill development and on-ice preparation to leadership development, accountability and cultivating an environment in which student-athletes feel supported, challenged and connected.
 
A graduate of Acadia University, Cavanagh earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in 2017 with concentrations in marketing and finance before completing a Master of Science degree in Data Analytics and Nonprofit Leadership at Robert Morris in 2019.
 
Prior to his career in collegiate coaching, Cavanagh was a goaltender at Charles P. Allen High School and played junior hockey in the Maritime Hockey League and Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League.
 
Beyond the rink, Cavanagh founded a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping professional and collegiate athletes create greater balance in their lives while recognizing the importance of mental health and personal well-being. He has also founded several startup companies, including a sports apparel company built around charitable initiatives. Those experiences have strengthened his commitment to holistic development and shaped his belief that an impactful college hockey program must prepare its student-athletes not only to perform at their highest level, but also to become confident, capable people beyond the rink.
 
Cavanagh began his coaching journey in 2009 and has since held coaching and player-development roles across North America with stops in Nova Scotia, Massachusetts, Colorado and Pittsburgh. Throughout his career, he has worked with athletes across the youth, junior, collegiate and professional levels, building a broad background in recruiting, teaching, evaluation, leadership and program development.
