Robert Morris Completes Sweep of Wayne State

Moon Township, Pa. ? The Robert Morris University men's ice hockey team, 4-2-0, 2-0-0 CHA, completed its weekend sweep of Wayne State (0-5-1, 0-2-0 CHA) with a 4-1 victory over the Warriors Saturday evening at the RMU Island Sports Center.

 

The Colonials scored three power-play goals, including the game's opening goal 15:58 into the first period by senior Ryan Cruthers (Farmingdale, N.Y. / Army). Chris Margott (Thousand Oaks, Calif. / Bay State Breakers) and Chris Kaufman (Gig Harbor, Wash. / Helena Bighorns) tallied assists on the goal.

 

Wayne State answered back by dominating the second period and outshooting RMU, 16-2. They scored the periods only goal 2:57 into the period, when Dylan Exton beat senior goalie Christian Boucher (Orleans, Ontario / Cumberland Grads), tying the game at one.

 

The Colonials were on their heels heading into the third period and responded by returning the favor to Wayne State by scoring three unanswered goals and outshooting the Warriors, 10-4, in the third period. Brett Hopfe (Didsbury, Alberta / Olds Grizzlys) got things going with his first goal of the season and the game-winning goal 8:25 into the period. Sophomore Kyle Frieday (Burlington, Ontario / Oakville Blades) made the score, 3-1, less than one minute later on the power-play off a one-timer from the right circle. Kaufman and Margott tallied assists on the play. Margott put a cap on things with 3:30 left, deflecting Frieday's shot from the point past Warrior goalie Kyle Funkenhauser.

 

RMU went 3-for-6 on the power-play and was a perfect 3-for-3 on the penalty kill. Wayne State was a combined 0-for-8 on the power-play over the weekend.

 

Boucher allowed only one tally on 28 shots, while Funkenhauser made 18 saves for Wayne State.

 

The Colonials return to action Nov. 9-10 as they host CHA foe Niagara. Both games are scheduled to begin at 7:35 p.m. at the Island Sports Center.
