The Colonials (1-1) open a five-game road trip Wednesday night with cross-town rival Duquesne University (1-2) in a 7:00 p.m. tip-off. Wednesday's game is the home opener for the Dukes after startingthe season with three road games. The shortest trip of the season for Robert Morris, 32 miles round-trip, will be followed by their longest. RMU will travel 1,140 miles (one-way) to take part in the Florida Atlantic Thanksgiving Classic in Boca Raton, Fla., this Saturday, November 23, and Sunday, November 24. The Colonials take on host FAU Saturday and Big 12-member Missouri on Sunday.
Quick Stat
The Colonials five-game road trip is their longest since the 2001-02 season and also the longest under current head coach Sal Buscaglia. Robert Morris went 0-5 on that last five-game trip en route to a 3-22 record that season. Robert Morris has had two four-game road swings under Buscaglia, and interestingly, both have come during the Northeast Conference portion of the schedule. RMU posted a 3-1 mark in their four-game swing in 2004-05 and a 0-4 mark in their 3-24 2003-04 campaign.
All-Time Series vs. Duquesne
Robert Morris has played Duquesne 36 times with the Dukes holding a 24-12 advantage in the series. The teams have split games over the last four years with the home team winning each of those meetings. RMU and Duquesne first played in 1976 and have played every season except for the 1992-93, 1993-94 and 1996-97 seasons. They were both members of the Pennwood West conference from 1977-78 until 1982-83.
Scouting the Dukes
Duquesne is 1-2 to open the season with a pair of road losses coming at Clemson, 80-72, and at Cincinnatti, 90-82, in overtime. Their lone win of the new campaign was a 69-52 victory to open the season at Morehead State. The Dukes have three players averaging double-digits in scoring led by junior guard Kristi Little at 21.0 points per game. She also leads the team in assists (19) and steals (15), but has fouled out of two of their three games this season. Sophomore guard Keri Pryor is doing her damage from beyond the arc, hitting on 47.4 percent (9-19) of her three point chances and averaging 17.0 points per contest. Redshirt-freshman forward Samantha Pollino is adding 12.3 points and a team-best 7.3 rebounds.
Duquesne Head Coach Suzie McConnell-Serio
Suzie McConnell-Serio is in her first season at the helm of the Duquesne women's program after successful coaching stints in the WNBA and high school levels. McConnell-Serio won three AAAA state championships and four WPIAL AAAA championships in 13 seasons at Oakland Catholic High School. She moved on to coach the WNBA's Minnesota Lynx, earning Coach of the Year honors in 2004 after leading the Lynx to their second straight playoff appearance. As a player, McConnell-Serio was a First Team All-American at Penn State, won a gold medal with team USA and an All-WNBA First Team selection.
RMU Last Time Out
Robert Morris won easily in their 2007-08 home opener, defeating Kent State, 90-65. The Colonials (1-1) shot a scorching 53.8 percent (35-65) from the field while holding the Golden Flashes (0-2) to just 33.3 percent (23-69) shooting. Junior Sade Logan paced the 10 Colonials who recorded points in the game with 23 on 9-22 shooting and added a team-best eight rebounds. Senior Chinata Nesbit nearly recorded a triple-double with 21 points, nine assists and seven rebounds. Junior Brittany Dukes had nine points and two assists in her first major playing time of the season. RMU never trailed in the game and led by as many as 30 points.
Leading Scorers: Sade Logan (23), Chinata Nesbit (21), Brittany Dukes (9)
Leading Rebounders: Sade Logan (8), Chinata Nesbit (7), Angela Pace (6)
Assists: Chinata Nesbit (9), Kendra Williams (4), Angela Pace (3)
Play on Player ... of the Week
Senior forward Chinata Nesbit was named the Choice Hotels Northeast Conference Player of the Week. Nesbit helped guide the Colonials to a 1-1 start with a convincing 90-65 win over Kent State and slim loss, 67-63, at Florida in the season opener. Nesbit opened the season with her 16th career double-double on the road at Florida. She had 16 points and 12 rebounds on 7-16 shooting. She spearheaded the Colonials' 90-point effort in a 25-point victory over Kent State by tallying 21 points, nine assists, seven rebounds and three steals, nearly recording her first triple-double. Last week, the All-NEC selection averaged 18.5 points, 9.5 rebounds, five assists and three steals while shooting 54 percent from the field.
Three for Me
Its no wonder why Sade Logan wears #3 on the back of her jersey. The 6-0 junior guard has attempted more three-pointers this season, 27, than the rest of the team combined, 15. Logan is averaging a team-best 21.5 points per game and has connected on eight of those 27 three-point attempts (29.6 percent). She finished with 20 points at Florida and had 23 points at home against Kent State. Logan is on pace to break every field goal season record except field goals made. She is on pace for 623 attempts, 223 three-point attempts, 246 field goals and 116 three-point field goals.
Setting a Fast Pace
Junior transfer Angela Pace set a fast pace for herself to follow after two games. Coming off the bench, Pace is averaging 9.0 points and 5.5 rebounds per game. She is second on the team with nine assists and is tied for second on the team with five steals. Pace is shooting a robust 88.9 percent (8-9). Against Kent State, she had six points and six boards. In her debut against Florida, she came off the bench to tally 12 points, a team-best six assists, five rebounds and two steals in 23 minutes of play. Pace hit all five of the shots she took from the field and even went 2-for-2 from the free throw line. The only blemish on an otherwise perfect night for Pace - five turnovers.
Sreading the Wealth
Robert Morris had 10 different players score against Kent State with just two, Chinata Nesbit (21) and Sade Logan (23), reaching double-digits. Four players recorded their first career points as a Colonial on Thursday - freshmen Tiffany McMillion and Shakeena Cunningham and juniors Grace Williams and Brittany Dukes. The only players on the RMU roster without a point this season are freshman Destiny Harrison and juniors Gwen Edwards and Latavia Vails. Vails has yet to dress this season.
Trouble in the Iron City
Robert Morris is 38-47 all-time against teams who call Pittsburgh their home city, but that stat is slightly misleading. Of those wins, 26 have come against non-Division I opponents. Against the city's other two Division I schools, Duquesne and Pittsburgh, Robert Morris is 12-47. RMU is undefeated against Carlow (5-0), Carnegie Mellon (7-0) and Point Park (14-0). The Colonials have not played any of those teams since beating Point Park, 79-56, in 1989.
