Providence Sends Colonials Home With 7-1 Setback

Providence, R.I. ? The Robert Morris University women's ice hockey team suffered just their second loss in the month of November, as the Colonials fell to the Providence College Friars, 7-1, at the Schneider Arena this afternoon.

Entering into today's game, the Colonials (7-8-1) had won six of their last seven games and had a 4-1 record in the month of November.

Robert Morris started out the game determined as freshman Maria Stoa (Bloomington, Minn. / Eden Prairie) scored her second goal in as many days to open up the game, just 3:49 into the first period. Freshman Sara O'Malley (Guelph, Ontario / Hamilton Hawks) and junior Samantha Ullrich (St. Louis, Mo. / Team Illinois U-19) each were awarded an assist on the goal.

Providence overcame the early deficit later in the period, scoring three goals in the span of five minutes to close out the frame with a 3-1 advantage.

The Friars kept to their guns in the second period, adding a pair of goals to finish the frame with a 5-1 lead and forcing junior Brianne McLaughlin (Sheffield Village, Oh. / Ohio Flames) to make an early exit. McLaughlin played 40 minutes with 25 saves in her fourteenth appearance of the season.

It was no different for Providence in the third period as they would go on to score two more goals en route to a 7-1 victory. Freshman Daneca Butterfield (Kronau, Saskatchewan / Notre Dame Hounds) finished the game in net for Robert Morris, making 13 saves on 15 shots.

Robert Morris was outshot 45-15, while converting one-of-six chances on the power-play. Providence converted two-of-four chances on the extra-man advantage.

After concluding their six-game road trip, the Colonials return to the RMU Island Sports Center to host Division III opponent RIT on Friday, Dec. 7 at 11:05 a.m., and again on Saturday, Dec. 8, at 4:05 p.m.
