Columbus, Oh. - The Robert Morris University men's lacrosse team opened up their 2007 season today, falling to the Ohio State Buckeyes, 13-5, at North Turf Field in Columbus, Oh.
The Colonials (0-1, 0-0 CAA), led by Junior Andrew Watt (Kitchener, Ontario / Grand River Collegiate) and Senior Carlo Sunseri (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Mt. Lebanon), registered seven players with points in the contest. Watt scored two goals while Sunseri added a man-up goal and an assist. Sophomore Lee Davis (Melbourne, Australia / Heathdale Christian College) and Junior Alex Sewell (Mount Airy, Md. / Linganore) each added a score.
Despite falling behind 1-0 early in the first quarter, Robert Morris answered back with two strikes less than a minute apart. Watt found the back of the net first, tying the game up at 12:01 while 36 seconds later, Sewell gave the Colonials their first and only lead of the game at 12:25. Ohio State would bounce back and add two scores to finish out the quarter 4-2.
Robert Morris would cut the lead to one in the opening minute of the second quarter. Andrew Watt tallied his second goal of the game at 13:54 to make the score 4-3.
That would be as close as the Colonials would get as OSU would go on a run, scoring nine unanswered goals over the second and third quarters.
In the final stanza of play, Robert Morris found that momentum they had early in the game. The Colonials shut-out the potent Ohio State offense while scoring the only two goals of the final stanza. Davis and Sunseri closed out the offense in the game, scoring goals at the 9:50 and 8:27 marks. Sunseri claimed the only extra-man goal for the Colonials in the fourth quarter.
In net for Robert Morris, Sophomore John Kennedy (Rockville Centre, N.Y. / South Side) played 41:16, making seven saves and allowing 11 goals while Junior Jason Dockum (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Mt. Lebanon) wrapped up the final 18:44, making three saves and allowing two goals.
While adding a goal, Sewell dominated in the face-off department, winning 52% of the draws with a 9-17 mark. The Colonials overall were 9-19 in face-offs while Ohio State was 10-19.
The Buckeyes didn't falter much in the game, completing 17-20 clears, with a perfect 6-6 in the second quarter compared to the Colonials 13-21 for the game.
Ohio State out-shot the Colonials 32-25 and held the advantage in ground balls 36-28.
The Colonials make their first appearance at Joe Walton Stadium this season next week as they host Greensburg native Seton Hill on February 17. Game time is slated for 1:00 p.m.
