Moon Township, Pa. - The Robert Morris University men's lacrosse team knocked off Seton Hill University, 11-3, at Joe Walton Stadium Wednesday afternoon. The Colonials (1-1), led by Junior Andrew Watt (Kitchener, Ont. / Grand River Collegiate) and a five point performance, beat the Griffins for the second year in a row.
The 11 goals scored today ties the highest number of goals scored by the Colonials in their three-year history. Robert Morris scored 11 against St. Joseph's University in the first ever Robert Morris men's lacrosse game on February 20, 2005.
Four Colonials picked up multi-point performances in the victory including Sophomore Brandon Johnson (Finksburg, Md. / Westminster) and Senior Carlo Sunseri (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Mt. Lebanon) who each scored two goals and added two assists, while Junior Michael Fleming (Sarnia, Ont. / St. Christopher) picked up a goal and two assists.
Sophomore Billy Conques (Fairfax, Va. / Paul VI) and Junior Brendan Arthur (Kansas City, Mo. / Rockhurst) each tallied a goal.
Both teams opened up the first quarter as it was anyone's game to win. Robert Morris and Seton Hill went back fourth with scores, ending the quarter tied 2-2. Andrew Watt was the primary offense for the Colonials in the stanza, scoring back-to-back goals. Watt's first opened up the scoring for both teams at the 10:04 mark, while his second broke up a 1-1 tie with 4:47 left to go in the quarter.
Once the quarter came to a close, the Colonials quit playing around and started to put the game out of reach. Robert Morris went on a nine-goal run, scoring four in the second, three in the third, and two in the fourth, holding the Griffins scoreless until the final minutes of the game.
Robert Morris out-shot the Griffins 34-18 for the game, while holding the advantage in ground balls, 24-19.
Sophomore John Kennedy (Rockville Centre, N.Y. / South Side) recorded the victory in net making five saves for the game. Junior Jason Dockum (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Mt. Lebanon), Freshman Brian Guy (Garden City, N.Y. / Chaminade) and Freshman Dan MacNeil (Troy, Mich. / Athens) all saw time in the second half. Dockum recorded two saves while MacNeil closed out the fourth quarter with one save.
Robert Morris is back at Joe Walton Stadium again on Sunday February 25 when they host Wagner College. Game time is scheduled for a 12:00 p.m. start.
