Moon Township, Pa. - Sophomore Brandon Johnson (Finksburg, Md. / Westminster) and Junior Michael Fleming (Sarnia, Ont. / St. Christopher) led the offense with two goals and assist each as the Robert Morris University men's lacrosse team fell to the 16th-ranked Drexel Dragons, 13-9, at Joe Walton Stadium this afternoon.
The Colonials (3-7, 0-4 CAA) registered six players with goals including Junior Lee Davis (Melbourne, Australia / Heathdale Christian) with two goals. Freshman Pat Britton (Germantown, Md. / Seneca Valley), Junior Corey Spuhler (Pittsburgh, Pa. / North Hills) and Sophomore Billy Conques (Fairfax, Va. / Paul VI) each scored.
Junior Brendan Arthur (Kansas City, Mo. / Rockhurst), Freshman Kyle Marceau (Concord, N.H. / Concord) and Senior Carlo Sunseri (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Mt. Lebanon) each picked up an assist.
After spending the past three weeks on the road, the men's lacrosse team made their presence felt at Joe Walton Stadium in battling the first place team in the Colonial Athletic Association.
Drexel's Andrew Chapman got the game's scoring started with his first of five goals in the game at 13:23. Johnson evened the scored less than four minutes later off an assist from Marceau when he tipped toed the crease, beating the Dragon's Bruce Bickford one-on-one.
Drexel put together a three goal run to take a 4-1 lead as the quarter came to a close. With 22 seconds left in the first, Colonials' Lee Davis added his first goal of the year to bring the home team within two.
The second quarter saw Robert Morris close within one as Pat Britton took a pass from Fleming at 13:49 to close within one. Drexel answered the score as Chapman added his fourth goal of the game less than a minute later. Johnson added his second goal to bring RMU back within one but Drexel had other plans. The Dragons peppered the net with five goals through the rest of the second quarter and into the third.
The Colonials got the offense back on track with a goal by Davis in the third quarter. The junior added his second unassisted goal of the game at 12:58 to start off an exchange of goals between the two teams for the remainder of the game.
Conques, Spuhler and two by Fleming wrapped up the scoring for Robert Morris in the second half but the second quarter frenzy from the Dragons proved to be too much to battle back from.
Both teams battled hard in the 13-9 affair, with Robert Morris falling behind in shots, 39-23, ground balls, 22-19, and in face-offs, winning 9-23.
Junior Chris Walsh (Mason, Oh. / Moeller) was a force on defense for RMU, causing five turnovers in the game while adding four ground balls.
Freshman Sal Barcia (West Islip, N.Y. / West Islip) and Junior Jason Dockum (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Mt. Lebanon) shared time in net with Barcia playing the first half, making five saves and allowing nine goals. Dockum took over in the second half, making eight saves and allowing four goals.
The Colonials take to the road for their next game, traveling across the state to Philadelphia on Saturday, April 14, as they take on CAA foe Villanova. Game time is set for a 1:00 p.m. start.
