Robert Morris Scores Second Straight Win Over Syracuse

Box Score

Pittsburgh, Pa. ? Oct. 11, 2008 ? The Robert Morris University Colonials repeated their success from the night before with another win over conference foe Syracuse on Saturday night at Clearview Arena. Three different Colonials scored in the win, with Megan Picinic (Cliffside Park, N.J. / Princeton Tigerlilies) scoring the game-winning goal.

The Syracuse Orange started off period one with the first strike of action at 10:18. Freshman Lisa Mullan fired a shot at the Robert Morris net during a power-play, senior netminder Brianne McLaughlin (Sheffield Village, Oh. / Ohio Flames) made the save, but freshman Megan Skelly grabbed the rebound and knocked it in.

Robert Morris answered back six minutes later when freshman Kathryn Stack (Edmonton, Alberta / Edmonton Thunder) took a slap shot from the left corner of the ice during a five on three power-play opportunity. Orange goalie Lucy Schoedel got a stick on it, but it deflected off the stick into the top left corner of the net for the score.

With less than thirty seconds left in the first period Robert Morris took advantage of another power-play opportunity when junior Mallory Giambra (Rochester, N.Y. / Rochester Edge) triggered a shot that bounced off the boards and around the net. Freshman Brianna Delaney (Stittsville, Ontario / NCCP Raiders) grabbed the puck and tapped it in to give Robert Morris the 2-1 lead.

In period one Robert Morris went two-for-two on power-play opportunities. Syracuse fired off 10 shots in the first period, to Robert Morris' six and McLaughlin stopped nine pucks to Schoedel's four.

The Colonials entered the second period with the lead and were able to hold it, with neither the Orange or the Colonials finding the net. Robert Morris outshot the Orange 11 to five. Schoedel stopped 11 pucks and McLaughlin made five saves to keep the score 2-1.

Little time passed in the third period before a score was made. Syracuse knotted the game 2-2 at 3:49 during another power-play when Mullan found an opening in McLaughlin's net for her first score of the night.

Robert Morris quickly regained the advantage at 8:45 when sophomore Whitney Pappas (Evergreen, Co. / Belle Tire) fired a deep shot from the right side of the ice. The puck repelled off an Orange player and Picinic picked it up and slipped it pass Schoedel for the game-winning score.

With little avail the Orange pulled their goalie with 15 seconds left in the game. The Colonials held off the extra man for the 3-2 win.

Both teams had even opportunities throughout the game with the Colonials putting up 24 shots and Syracuse making 23 shots. The two opponents also had equal power-play opportunities, with Robert Morris going three for seven and the Orange connecting on two of their seven power-play opportunities.  McLaughlin and Schoedel each had identical 21 save games.

The Colonials are off next week, but return to action on Friday and Saturday, October 24-25 when they travel to Canton, N.Y. to take on St. Lawrence at 7:35 p.m.
