RMU Downs Wayne State in OT 4-3

Detroit, Mich. ? With Chris Margott's (Thousand Oaks, Calif. / Bay State Breakers) 14th goal of the season in overtime, the Robert Morris University men's ice hockey team defeated the Wayne State Warriors, 4-3, Saturday night, marking only the third time in the programs four-year history that the team has swept a two-game series on the road, including the second this season. With the victory the Colonials improve to 13-11-3 overall and to 8-4-2 in College Hockey America action, while the Warriors dropped to 8-20-2 overall and to 4-10-0 in CHA play.

 

Senior Ryan Cruthers (Farmingdale, N.Y. / Army) got the Colonials on the board just 1:47 into the opening period making the score, 1-0. Denny Urban (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Ohio Blue Jackets) and Kyle Burton (Calgary, Alberta / Calgary Canucks) tallied assists on the play. Jeff Caister tied the game at the 6:01 mark with a power-play marker, making the score, 1-1, at the first intermission.

 

Derek Bachynski gave the Warriors their only lead of the game, scoring the period's only goal, just 3:02 into the second session with Matt Krug tallying an assist on the play.

 

Robert Morris scored two goals just 17 seconds apart taking a, 3-2, lead when things were all said and done. Cruthers got things going with his 18th goal of the season, setting a new RMU single-season high for goals, at the 11:01 mark. Margott and Andrew Bonello (Brampton, Ontario / Milton Icehawks) recorded assists on the goal. Freshman Nathan Longpre (Peterborough, Ontario / Mahoning Valley Phantoms) notched his sixth of the season at the 11:18 mark, with Jason Towsley (La Salle, Ontario / Leamington Flyers) tallying the assist on the play. Jared Katz would however send the game to overtime with a goal at the15:05 mark tying the game at three all.

 

Margott completed the weekend sweep of the Warriors with a goal just 58 seconds into the extra session with a power-play goal. Urban and Chris Kaufman (Kamloops, B.C. / Canmore Eagles) recorded assists on the game-winner for the Colonials.

 

Senior goalie Christian Boucher (Orleans, Ontario / Cumberland Grads) made 22 saves on 25 shots for the Colonials, while Brett Bothwell stopped 28-of-32 shots faced.

 

Robert Morris went 1-for-7 on the power-play and held the edge in shots 32-25.

 

The Colonials return to action next weekend, Feb. 15-16, for a pair of 7:35 p.m. games with CHA leading Bemidji State at the RMU Island Sports Center.
