Moon Township, Pa. ? ? The Robert Morris University softball team saw its winning streak end at eight games Sunday afternoon as they defeated Quinnipiac, 4-1, in game one of the doubleheader before falling, 6-3, in eight innings in game two. The Colonials are now 18-14 overall and 8-2 in NEC action.
The Colonials took game one by the score of, 4-1, with all four runs coming in the third inning. Kayla Crooks (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Brashear) reached first after being hit by a pitch and then advanced to third base with a pair of wild pitches. Jessica Calderone (Wilmington, De. / St. Marks) grounded out to second base, scoring Crooks. Brenna Reed (Carnegie, Pa. / Montour) and Susan Perich (Center, Pa. / Center) then hit back-to-back home runs making the score, 4-0. Reed's fourth home run of the season also scored Brooke Panepinto (Belle Vernon, Pa. / Belle Vernon).
Quinnipiac scored its lone run in the sixth when Reed walked in Brianna Sloane. Reed pitched seven innings allowing one run on three hits. She also struck out six batters, recording her sixth victory of the season.
Robert Morris took a, 3-1, lead in the bottom of the third inning after Annie Dubovec (Chargin Falls, Ohio / Kenston) scored on an error by the left fielder on a Megan Lynch (Allison Park, Pa. / Shaler) single. Panepinto and Reed gave RMU its two run lead with back-to-back home runs to lead off the third inning.
The Colonials held the lead until the top of the seventh, when Kristin Sheriff hit a solo home run to tie the game at three. Joelle Jacobsen gave the Bobcats the lead for good in the top of the eighth inning when she drove a ball over the right field fence scoring three. The Colonials were unable to score in their half of the eighth giving Quinnipiac a, 6-3, victory.
Lindsey Moates (Ocala, Fla. / Forest) took the loss for the Colonials, pitching seven and two-thirds innings. She allowed six runs on 13 hits, while striking out four batters.
Robert Morris returns to action Tuesday, April 15 has they travel to Pittsburgh for a 3:00 p.m. start.
