#20 Hofstra Spoils Senior Day for Men's Lacrosse, 13-12

Box Score

Moon Township, Pa. ? Senior John Kennedy (Rockville Centre, N.Y. / South Side) stifled #20 Hofstra with a career-high 23 save performance, but the Robert Morris University men's lacrosse team could not fend off a late fourth quarter comeback by the Pride as they defeated the Colonials, 13-12, on senior day at Joe Walton Stadium Saturday afternoon.

Kennedy's 23 saves was the most ever by the veteran netminder, which also tied the program-mark for most saves in a game set by sophomore Sal Barcia (West Islip, N.Y. / West Islip) against Wagner on February 24, 2008.

Not to overshadow the goaltender, but senior Andrew Watt (Kitchener, Ontario / Grand River Collegiate) also put on a valiant performance as the attacker buried five goals and tallied two assists for seven points. Watt finishes the season with 55 points and 128 for his career.

Freshmen Trevor Moore (Port Coquitlam, B.C. / Western Reserve Academy) and Corbyn Tao-Brambleby (Coquitlam, B.C. / Western Reserve Academy) each had three points with Moore notching three goals and Tao-Brambleby scoring a goal and two assists.

The Colonials (4-11, 0-6 CAA) outgunned Hofstra in the opening quarter with a 4-3 scoring advantage.  Tao-Brambleby gave RMU the 1-0 lead after connecting off a pass from senior Michael Fleming (Sarnia, Ontario / St. Christopher), who finished the game with two assists, at 13:24 followed by a strike from Watt at 11:36 to make the score, 2-0. Hofstra's Jay Card cut the lead to one with his first of the game at 10:05, before both teams exchanged scores through the rest of the quarter. Goals by Watt and Moore ended the frame with the Colonials up by one.

Robert Morris pulled away in the second with three straight goals forcing the visitors to burn a timeout. Senior Lee Davis (Melbourne, Australia / Heathdale Christian College) put away his second of the season at 14:01 while Moore and Watt got back in the scoring action with a tally apiece at 6:20 and 4:40. Hofstra caught fire though in the final minutes with back-to-back markers to take a 7-5 deficit into halftime.

Coming out of the break, Hofstra tacked in two more goals less than a minute apart to tie the game at 7-7. But another score by Davis gave the Colonials an 8-7 edge with 10:02 left in the quarter and started a 3-1 outburst over the next 3:53. Card's fast-break goal at 9:59 tied the game at 8-8 before junior Dan Kerch (Chesterfield, Mo. / DeSmet) put RMU back on top at 7:33. Watt found the back of the net twice at 6:49 and 6:06 to boast the lead to three.

The momentum, however, was stopped quickly as inclement weather forced both teams to take a 38-minute break at the 4:02 mark. Thanks to the poor conditions, Hofstra was able to set up a rally plan for remainder of the game. The Pride broke the Colonials grip on the score with a five-goal run that extended into the fourth quarter and gave the visitors a 13-11 advantage.

RMU made a last second run at the Pride, scoring with just: 03 showing on the clock thanks to Moore's third of the game and a face-off win assist by freshman Keith Lee (Hudson, Oh. / Western Reserve Academy). Despite the score though, Hofstra smothered the ensuing face-off to seal the 13-12 victory and hand the Colonials their fifth one-goal loss of the season.

Hofstra outshot the Colonials, 51-33, and held the advantage in ground balls, 30-28. Danny Orlando picked up the victory in net with nine saves.
