Colonials Extend Winning Streak to Five in a Row

Moon Township, Pa. ? The Robert Morris University softball team improved its winning streak to a season best five games on Wednesday afternoon by sweeping a pair of games against Akron. The Colonials are now, 15-13, on the season after winning, 4-3 and 8-0.

RMU and Akron matched each other run for run through the first three innings of game one, with each team scoring one run in the first and two runs in the third. The Colonials got on the board first after back-to-back doubles by Brooke Panepinto (Belle Vernon, Pa. / Belle Vernon) and Brenna Reed (Carnegie, Pa. / Montour).

Akron tied the game, 1-1, in the bottom of the first, but Robert Morris took the lead again with a Panepinto two-run home run, giving the Colonials a 3-1 lead. Akron would again match the Colonials' output, tying the game, 3-3, after three innings, but Megan Lynch (Allison Park, Pa. / Shaler) homered in the seventh giving RMU a 4-3 victory.

Lindsey Moates (Ocala, Fla. / Forest) picked up her 10th victory of the season, pitching a complete game and allowing three runs on eight hits. She also tallied four strikeouts.

The Colonials dominated game two from the start, jumping to a 3-0 lead in the third inning. Camille Kline (Titusville, Pa. / Titusville) began the inning by reaching first base on an Akron error followed by a double from Jessica Calderone (Wilmington, Del. / St. Marks). Panepinto walked to load the bases before Reed brought Kline home with a sacrifice fly. Susan Perich (Center, Pa. / Center) followed with a single to plate Calderone, and after Lynch was hit by a pitch to again load the bases, Kristin McDaniel (Yardley, Pa. / Pennsbury) capped off the inning with an RBI single.

Panepinto led off the fifth inning with a home run, McDaniel later hit a three-run home run and the game ended on a Lauren Nisivoccia (Nutley, N.J. / Mount St. Dominic) single scoring Kayla Crooks (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Brashear).

Annie Dubovec (Chargin Falls, Ohio / Kenston) picked up the win, allowing zero runs on six hits, while striking out four.

The Colonials return to action on April 12 as they host Northeast Conference opponent Central Connecticut State for a doubleheader at 1:00 p.m.
