Box Score Pittsburgh, Pa. - October 17, 2009 - The events of game two of the series between the Robert Morris University Colonials and No. 8/10 St. Lawrence looked almost identical to the first game with the Colonials holding a solid lead after the second period. Just like Friday night, the Saints came through with a surge of goals in the third period to top the Colonials 6-3 on Saturday afternoon at Clearview arena.
After nearly 12 minutes of play in the first period Saint Lawrence got the first point on the board when Kirsten Roach found the puck amidst a scuffle in the front of the net and found an opening for her first goal of the season. Michelle Ng was credited with the assist on the play.
The Colonials quickly answered back when freshman Dayna Newsom (Oakville, Ontario / Oakville Ice) sent the puck back to junior Whitney Pappas (Evergreen, Co. / Belle Tire) who fired the puck into the left corner of the goal. Freshman Jennifer Kindret (Winnipeg, Manitoba / BC Breakers) was awarded with the second helper.
Robert Morris wasted little time in the second period to gain a one goal advantage. When faced with pressure from a St. Lawrence blue liner, junior Sara O'Malley (Guelph, Ontario / Hamilton Hawks) fought off the defenseman and flipped the biscuit up and over SLU goalie Maxie Weisz for her fourth goal of the season at 2:03.
A little over three minutes later senior Mallory Giambra (Rochester, N.Y. / Rochester Edge) took hold of the puck in RMU's defensive zone and passed it up to sophomore Brianna Delaney (Stittsville, Ontario / NCCP Raiders) at center ice. Delaney carried it into the offensive zone and dropped the puck off to senior Jordan Riley (Hamilton, Ontario / Stoney Creek Sabres) who drilled it into the far side of the net.
At 9:26 St. Lawrence brought the score back within one when awarded a five-on-three power play. The Saints fired off shot after shot, but junior goalie Daneca Butterfield (Kronau, Saskatchewan / Notre Dame Hounds) was able to hold off the attack until Alley Bero found teammate Tara Akstull's rebound and went back door to beat Butterfield for her second goal of the season.
The Saints came out in the third period and overwhelmed the Colonials with four goals. The first came at 5:09 when Kayla Sullivan rifled a shot into the Colonial net off assists from Kelly Sabatine and Vanessa Edmond. At 8:47 the Saints grabbed their first lead since the first period when Jamie Goldsmith scored her third goal of the season, with Bero assisting on the play.
Less than two minutes later, Sabatine took a hard shot to the Colonial net, which was almost stopped but trickled into the net for the score and the 5-3 lead. In an effort to get back into the game the Colonials pulled their goalie, but the Saints secured the win with an empty net goal by Edmond.
St. Lawrence outshot the Colonials 38 to 28 and was successful on one-of-seven power play opportunities, while RMU was unable to capitalize on four tries. Butterfield finished the game with 32 saves, while Weisz tallied 15 and teammate Brittony Chartier added 10.
The Colonials head to Maine on October 23-24 to take on the Black Bears at 7:00 p.m. on Friday and 2:00 p.m. on Saturday.
