Robert Morris Rolls to Fourth Straight Victory

Box Score

Moon Township, Pa. - The Robert Morris University football team scored 27 unanswered points in the second half Saturday afternoon in rolling to its fourth straight win, posting a 37-10 victory over Wagner at Joe Walton Stadium.

The Colonials improved to 4-6 overall and 4-3 in the Northeast Conference on the 2009 campaign, while the Seahawks had their four-game winning streak snapped, falling to 6-4 overall and 5-2 in league play.

Sophomore Anthony Coleman (Cheltenham, Md. / St. John's College High School) opened the second half by returning the kickoff 42 yards, setting up the Colonial offense at the 50-yard line.

Freshman quarterback Jeff Sinclair (Natrona Heights, Pa. / Highlands) capitalized on the field position, marching Robert Morris the rest of the way and connecting with sophomore tight end Shadrae King (McKeesport, Pa. / McKeesport) for a 14-yard touchdown pass to give the Colonials a 17-10 advantage.

Wagner went three-and-out on its next possession, which was aided by a sack by senior defensive lineman Mark Szymanski (Cadogan, Pa. / Ford City), and the Colonials marched right down the field on their second possession of the quarter to increase their lead to 24-10.

Sinclair capped the drive with a 24-yard scoring strike to Tyler Digby (New Westminster, B.C. / New Westminster), which marked the first career reception for the freshman tight end. Sinclair kept the drive alive with his feet, scrambling for an 11-yard gain on 3rd-and-11 that kept the chains moving.

Junior kicker Garrett Clawson (Duncansville, Pa. / Hollidaysburg) added a career-long 46-yard field goal with 1:23 to go in the third quarter that increased RMU's advantage to 27-10, and his third field goal of the contest with 8:19 remaining, a 34-yard boot, gave the Colonials a 30-10 lead. It marks the third time this season Clawson has tied the RMU single-game school record for field goals in a game with three.

Senior quarterback Camdin Crouse (Snow Shoe, Pa. / Bald Eagle), inserted in the fourth quarter with under seven minutes to play, capped the scoring with a two-yard touchdown plunge with 2:07 to go that sealed the win for Robert Morris.

Crouse connected with senior wide receiver Sherrod Evers (Philadelphia, Pa. / Mastbaum Area) for an 18-yard completion during the drive, while junior halfback Myles Russ (Boca Raton, Fla. / West Boca) scampered 26 yards down to the Wagner two-yard line to set up the final score of the day.

Robert Morris took an early 7-0 advantage when Sinclair tossed the first of his three touchdown passes of the afternoon by connecting with Evers for a five-yard score at the 9:08 mark of the first quarter. The touchdown was set up by the RMU defense, as senior safety Michael Richards (Brooklyn, N.Y. / Bishop Ford) intercepted Wagner quarterback Nick Doscher and returned it 64 yards to the Seahawk 23-yard line.

Despite an illegal block penalty during the return that started the drive for the Colonials at their own 40-yard line, on the first offensive play of the game for RMU Russ burst through the line and raced 46 yards to the Wagner 15-yard line.

Wagner came back to tie it, 7-7, when Doscher scored from two yards out to cap an eight-play, 66-yard drive, but Robert Morris jumped back in front, 10-7, on a 36-yard field goal by Clawson. The Seahawks were able to knot the score heading into the break, 10-10, when David Lopez booted a 32-yard field goal with 31 seconds left before halftime.

Sinclair finished 15-for-27 passing for 197 yards and three touchdowns, completing a pass to eight different receivers. He did not throw an interception and suffered just one sack. Evers led the receiving corps with five catches for 73 yards and a touchdown, while King finished with three receptions for 31 yards and a score.

Russ posted his fourth 100-yard rushing game of the season and 10th of his career with a season-high 173 yards rushing on 19 attempts, an average of 9.1 yards per carry.

Robert Morris rolled up a season-high 422 yards of total offense in the win, while Wagner finished with 286 total yards. The Seahawks dominated time of possession in the first half, holding the ball for 22:49, but ended up with a 32:11 to 27:49 edge on the game.

Senior safety Michael Landers (Springdale, Pa. / Springdale) led the defense with 12 tackles, including 10 stops in the first half, while junior linebacker Elias Navarro (Fort Lauderdale, Fla. / South Plantation) posted 11 takedowns, including half a sack.

The Colonials will look to close out their 2009 campaign on a five-game winning streak Saturday, Nov. 21, when they travel to Kessler Field for a Noon kickoff against Monmouth in West Long Branch, N.J.
