Bemidji, Minn. – For the second consecutive night, the Robert Morris University men's hockey team continued CHA action at #11/12 Bemidji State in John S. Glas Fieldhouse. The Colonials ran into penalty trouble early, and the Beavers quickly capitalized to stayed undefeated and down RMU, 6-1.
It was the Beavers who lit the lamp for the first time of the night at 8:46 of the first period thanks to Darcy Findlay's first of the season. Bemidji State, leading 1-0 at the end of one, also held the advantage on shots after the first, 17-9.
Bemidji State then extended the lead to 2-0 with a breakaway score from Tyler Lerhke. Ben Kinne and Jamie MacQueen recorded assists on the BSU goal at 6:29 of the second period. Just two minutes later, the Beavers went up by three with an Ian Lowe goal to give Bemidji State the commanding, 3-0, lead.
Late in the second period, the Colonials finally found the back of the night as junior Denny Urban (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Ohio Blue Jackets) pushed the puck past the BSU netminder for the lone RMU goal of the weekend. Assists on the power play goal were awarded to Trevor Lewis (Lititz, Pa. / Syracuse Stars) and Zach Hervato (Stittsville, Ontario / Smiths Falls Bears).
Although the score was still 3-1 in favor of the Beavers, the Colonials outshot BSU, 12-9, in the second period.
But it did not take long for the Beavers offense to ignite once more and put a stop the Colonial momentum swing as the CHA's top scorer, Matt Read notched Bemidji's power play tally . Brad Hunt and Matt Carlson assisted on BSU's fourth goal of the night scored only one minute into the third period.
RMU's hopes looked up midway through the third as they went on a five-minute power play as a result of a BSU high-sticking penalty. However, the Colonials came up empty handed on the man advantage.
Robert Morris took another blow as they allowed the Beavers to record their fifth and sixth goals within just seconds of each other in the final few minutes of the third period.
Freshman Eric Levine (Wheeling, Ill. / Pembroke Lumber Kings) received the starting nod for the third time this season as he made 34 saves between the pipes for the Colonials.
Robert Morris picked up 12 penalty minutes in Saturday's contest, and allowed one Bemidji State power play goal. The Colonials went one-for-five on their power play opportunities, and were outshot 40-28.
The Colonials, now 2-6-0 and 0-2-0 after the first weekend of conference play, will continue against CHA rival, Niagara, next weekend. On Friday night, the Colonials will travel to Dywer Arena in Niagara, NY for a 7:05 p.m showdown. On Saturday, the Purple Eagles will make the trip to the RMU Island Sports Center for the second game of the series. Saturday's home contest will begin at 7:05 p.m.
