Kissimmee, Fla. ? After a short one day break, the Robert Morris University softball team got back to work in tournament play on Tuesday morning at the Rebel Games. Strong Colonial pitching highlighted the day has both RMU hurlers pitched complete game shutouts.
The first game against LaSalle proved to be a pitcher's duel as sophomore Annie Dubovec (Chagrin Falls, Ohio / Kentson) pitched her first career complete game, shutout victory. She picked up seven strikeouts and allowed the Explorers to record just two hits.
The Colonial offensive effort struggled early, but came to life in the bottom of the sixth inning. Freshman Jaci Timko (Houston, Pa. / Chartiers-Houston) led off the inning by legging out an impressive bunt to reach first. Timko then was moved over the second with a sacrifice by senior Lauren Nisivoccia (Nutley, NJ / Mount St. Dominic). Senior Brooke Panepinto (Belle Vernon, Pa. / Belle Vernon) then walked and advanced to second with a stolen base. Then senior Susan Perich (Center, Pa. / Center) picked up two RBIs and cleared the bases with her triple to center field to give RMU the 2-0 win.
In the second contest, Robert Morris got the gears started much earlier, taking a 1-0 in the top of the second inning. Freshman Katrina Gallagher (Canonsburg, Pa. / Canon-McMillan) walked to start the inning and senior Stacy Davidson (Akron, Ohio / Springfield) notched her second double of the year to bring her home to grab the lead.
Freshman Alexa Bryson (Greensburg, Pa. / Greater Latrobe) made her third start of the season for the Colonials and pitched her second consecutive complete game. In her first career shutout, Bryson tallied four strikeouts in seven innings of work and held her opponents to five hits.
Overall, the team managed nine hits against EKU and did not commit a single error.
Tomorrow, Robert Morris (3-5-0 ; 0-0-0 NEC) will play another two contests in the Rebel games against Valpariso and IPFW. The Valpo game is set for 3:00 p.m. while RMU will take on IPFW at 5:00 p.m.
