The Robert Morris University Colonials had their six-game winning streak snapped with a 19-13 defeat to the Ohio State Buckeyes on Friday evening at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. The Colonials played unyielding lacrosse throughout the entire game and even started the game with a quick three goal lead, but the Buckeyes were able to take back the lead by the end of the first quarter and never relinquished that advantage for the remainder of the game.
Leading the Colonials were freshman Kiel Matisz (Stoney Creek, Ontario / Saltfleet) and junior Patrick Smith (Westminster, Md. / Westminster), who each tallied three goals in the loss, while sophomore Trevor Moore (Port Coquitlam, B.C. / Western Reserve Academy) and Senior Dan Kerch (Chesterfield, Mo. /. DeSmet) each added a pair of goals in the game. Sophomore Corbyn Tao-Brambleby (Coquitlam, B.C. / Western Reserve Academy) recorded a team high two assists and junior goaltender Sal Barcia (West Islip, N.Y. / West Islip) notched 11 saves and led the team in ground balls with six.
The Colonials started off the game on a good note when sophomore Keith Lee (Hudson, Ohio / Western Reserve Academy) netted the first goal of the game 45 seconds into action. Within the next five minutes RMU's Kyle Buchanan (Nepean, Ontario / John McCrae) and Taylor Caparosa (Annapolis, Md. / Annapolis) each beat Ohio State goalie Brandon Freeman to take the early 3-0 lead.
However, at 6:00 Ohio State's, Mike Pires responded with a goal of his own, which started a string of three Buckeye goals to knot the score at 3-3.
With 6:40 left on the clock Moore tallied his first goal of the contest off an assist from Tao-Brambleby to take back the lead, but the Buckeyes were able to put two more goals on the scoreboard to head into the second quarter with a 5-4 advantage.
Ohio State added to their lead less than three minutes into the start of the second quarter when Pires tallied his third goal of the contest, which was followed by another Buckeye goal to increase their lead to 7-4.
The Buckeye defense continued to challenge the Colonials throughout the entire second quarter, but at 6:32 Matisz fired a shot into Ohio State's net to cut into their lead, 7-5. Before the end of the quarter, Ohio State was able to get the ball past Barcia two more times to set the score at 9-5 heading into the second half.
The third quarter looked very similar to the second, as Ohio State notched the first two goals of the second half within the first three minutes of the quarter. Robert Morris was able to squeeze two goals into the third quarter, but the Buckeyes added three more goals in the rest of the quarter to increase their lead to 14-7.
The Colonials made a run for it in the final quarter, scoring six goals to Ohio State's five, but it was not enough, as the Buckeyes went on to win 19-13. Smith and Matisz highlighted the final segment of action scoring twice apiece and Smith closed out action with the final score of the contest with one minute left on the clock.
Robert Morris and Ohio State were even on face-offs, with each squad recording 31 wins and Lee leading the way for the Colonials, going 8-for-17. RMU was 3-for-6 on extra man opportunities, while Ohio State was a perfect 4-for-4.
The Colonials return home on Tuesday, March 17 to take on Wagner at 3:00 p.m.
