The Robert Morris University Colonials scored the first goal of the contest for the seventh straight game, but could not overcome No. 6 Hofstra, and fell to the CAA foe 11-5 on Saturday afternoon at James M. Shuart Stadium. The loss drops Robert Morris to 7-4, while Hofstra improves to 6-1.
Trevor Moore (Port Coquitlam, B.C. / Western Reserve Academy) was the only Colonial to notch multiple goals in the contest, contributing two. Kyle Buchanan (Nepean, Ontario / John McCrae) and Kiel Matisz (Stoney Creek, Ontario / Saltfleet) each registered multiple points in the win with one goal and one assist apiece.
The Colonials opened up play when Moore received a pass from Buchanan at 4:41 in the first quarter and triggered a shot past Hofstra goalie Andrew Gvozden to take the early 1-0 lead.
However, the Hofstra Pride responded with three unanswered goals, two of which came in the first quarter. Ryan Carter scored the Pride's first goal on an unassisted play at 6:35 and then Steve Prifte scored his first goal of the season with 6:48 left on the clock, which ended the scoring in the first quarter.
The two squads played through nearly six minutes of the second quarter with neither team able to find the net. At 10:40 Hofstra's Tom Interlicchio took a pass from Tom Dooley and fired the ball into the net to take the 3-1 lead.
With 6:38 remaining on the clock junior Patrick Smith (Westminster, Md. / Westminster) took advantage of an extra-man opportunity and scored to cut into the Pride's lead, 3-2. Hofstra was able to net one more goal before the end of the second quarter to give it a 4-2 lead heading into the second-half.
Hofstra began to really pull ahead in the third quarter, as Kevin Ford put another point on the board for the Pride at 2:23 and then 47 seconds later Jay Card tallied his 14 goal of the season to give Hofstra a 6-2 cushion.
The Colonials were finally able to get through the Pride's defense when Buchanan found the back of Hofstra's net with 9:37 left on the clock. Before the end of the third quarter Hofstra scored two more times to set the score at 8-3 heading into the final quarter.
Moore increased RMU's goal total to four, as he scored just 1:14 into the quarter, but the Pride answered back with two goals of their own to give them the biggest lead of the game at 10-4. Both teams scored one more goal apiece before the end of regulation, which finalized the game 11-5.
Junior goalie Sal Barcia (West Islip, N.Y. / West Islip) finished the game with his second highest save total of the season with 16 stops, while Gvozden finished the game with eight saves. Robert Morris went 9-for-20 on face-offs, while Hofstra was 11-for-20. Each team capitalized on one extra-man opportunity with RMU going one-for-two and Hofstra going one-for-three.
The Colonials will look for their first conference win of the season on Saturday, April 4 against Drexel at Joe Walton Stadium at 1:00 p.m.
