Moon Township, Pa. ? In a rare feat, the Robert Morris University softball team swept NEC Player of the Week honors on Monday. Freshman Alexa Bryson (Greensburg, Pa. / Greater Latrobe) was named Pitcher of the Week while fellow freshman Allie Patton (Poland, Ohio / Poland) earned Rookie of the Week laurels. Senior Brooke Panepinto (Belle Vernon, Pa. / Belle Vernon) rounded out the trio as she was honored as Co-Player of the Week.
Over the past week, Bryson made three starting appearances and came away with complete-game wins each time. She upped her record to 9-1 on the season and helped the Colonials go 2-1 during the opening weekend of NEC play. The first-year player totaled 24 strikeouts over 21.0 innings of work and issued just one walk in each game. Bryson helped RMU to a 5-2 victory over St. Bonaventure on Mar. 25 as she struck out nine. In RMU's league-opener on Mar. 28, Bryson scattered four hits and fanned 10 as she propelled the Colonials to a 2-1 win over Monmouth. Over the trio of games, Bryson posted a 1.00 ERA, as she currently ranks fourth in the NEC with a 2.30 ERA and second with 76 Ks.
Patton, who currently possesses the Colonials' top batting average of .409 this season, recorded a hit in each of RMU's four games last week as she went 6-for-11 and hit .545. The Ohio native scored four runs, including the game-winner in a 2-1 defeat of Monmouth in their first of two contests on Mar. 28. Patton also added a stolen base in the second contest with the Hawks.
Starting in center field for all four games over the past week, Panepinto recorded at least one hit in every contest. Panepinto went 7-for-11 with a .636 average at the plate with six RBI and back-to-back home runs. In RMU's 5-2 win over St. Bonaventure on Mar. 25, the senior outfielder went 2-for-4 and drove in four runs with her round trippers. Against Monmouth, the Pennsylvania product went 3-for-5 over two games, as she rounded out the week with a solid 2-for-2 performance against the Mount. Panepinto's .370 batting average on the season is third on the team and seventh in the NEC, while she also ranks second on the squad with 27 hits and fourth with 10 runs scored.
The Colonials will kick off a busy week on Wednesday afternoon when Kent State comes to the North Athletic Complex for a double header. The first game is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
