RMU Suffers 12-10 Setback to Delaware

Box Score

Moon Township, Pa. ? April 11, 2009 ? A duo of Robert Morris University Colonial freshmen tallied a string of three goals in the final minutes of the fourth quarter, but it was not enough, as the Delaware Blue Hens went on to top the Colonials 12-10 on Saturday afternoon at Joe Walton Stadium.

The Colonials were led by last week's CAA Rookie of the Week Kyle Buchanan (Nepean, Ontario / John McCrae) who tallied a trio of goals and an assist for four points. All three of his goals came in the final quarter of regulation. Another rookie, Dave Morton (Orangeville, Ontario / Hill School), also tallied three goals, while sophomore Trevor Moore (Port Coquitlam, B.C. / Western Reserve Academy) captured two goals in the defeat.

Delaware secured the first goal of the game when Martin Cahill triggered a shot into the RMU net at 3:48. His goal was followed by two more Blue Hen goals to give Delaware the early 3-0 lead.

With 4:32 left on the clock Patrick Smith (Westminster, Md. / Westminster) received a pass from Corbyn Tao-Brambleby (Coquitlam, B.C. / Western Reserve Academy)  and triggered a shot past Blue Hen goalkeeper Noah Fossner to give RMU its first point. However, Delaware's Grant Kaleikau captured a goal 10 seconds later to give the Blue Hens a 4-1 lead heading into the second quarter.

The Colonials gave a better defensive performance in the second quarter, as they allowed only one Delaware goal. Robert Morris notched the first goal of the quarter just 1:04 into action and then tallied one more score before the end of the half to cut into Delaware's lead, 5-3.

Throughout the second-half, both squads gave identical performances with seven goals apiece. The Blue Hens started off the third quarter with two goals and 1:59 and 2:37, but Robert Morris answered right back with goals by Morton and Moore. Each team netted one more score before the end of regulation to set the score at 8-6 going into the final quarter.

Once again, the Blue Hens struck first when Curtis Dickson tallied his third goal of the game. His goal was followed with Cahill's fourth goal of the game to increase Delaware's lead to 10-6.

The Colonial freshmen put on a show in the fourth quarter, as they were the only class to score in the final segment of action. Buchanan scored at 3:33 off an assist from freshman Kiel Matisz (Stoney Creek, Ontario / Saltfleet), which was followed by two Delaware goals. In a final attempt to steal the win Buchanan scored back-to-back unassisted goals within 11 seconds of each other with less than three minutes left on the clock. Morton continued Buchanan's comeback effort with a score at 14:10 to make it a two-goal game.

The Colonials fired numerous shots in the remaining seconds of the game, but the Blue Hen defense was able to hold off their attack to capture the 12-10 win.

Junior goalie Sal Barcia (West Islip, N.Y. / West Islip) captured 15 saves in the win, while Fossner notched 16 saves. The two squads were relatively even on the face-off with Delaware going 12-for-26 and RMU winning 14-of-26. Delaware recorded zero extra-man opportunities, while the Colonials were successful on one-of-four opportunities.

The Colonials head to Villanova on Saturday, April 18 to take on the Wildcats at 1:00 p.m.
