Moon Township, Pa. ? On Thursday, head coach Derek Schooley of the Robert Morris University hockey program announced his annual team awards. Also, Schooley also announced the names of the captains for the 2009-10 season.
The Colonial's all-time point leader, Chris Margott (Thousand Oaks, Ca. / Bay State Breakers), was honored as this year's Most Valuable Player and Offensive Player of the Year. During the 2008-09 campaign, Margott posted 44 points with 21 goals and 23 assists as he led scoring in the CHA. He also scored the game tying goal to force overtime play against Bemidji State in the CHA championship game.
Sophomore Denny Urban (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Ohio Blue Jackets) was honored as RMU's Defensive Player of the Year. Urban recorded 27 points during the season as he tallied 4 goals and 23 assists. He also was a CHA All-First Team selection.
Taking home Freshman of the Year was forward Trevor Lewis (Lititz, Pa. / Syracuse Stars). Lewis was twice honored as the CHA's Rookie of the Week with his effort of 7 goals and 10 assists.
The award for Most Improved Player went to senior Jake Obermeyer (Chanhassen, Minn. / Tri-City Storm). Obermeyer, a defenseman, played in 33 games while scoring a career high eight points with one goal and seven assists.
Sophomore transfers Chris Kushneriuk (Ottawa, Ontario / Wayne State) and Brock Meadows (White Rock, BC / Wayne State) also picked up awards in their first season with the Colonials. Kushneriuk was bestowed with the honor of Most Inspirational Player while Meadows garnered Student Athlete of the Year laurels.
The Robert Morris captain for the 2009-10 season will be junior Dave Cowan (Calgary, Alberta / Olds Grizzlys) while the assistant captain duties have been awarded to sophomores Nathan Longpre (Peterborough, Ontario / Mahoning Valley Phantoms) and Kushneriuk.
The Colonials finished strong after a shaky start to the 2008-09 season. Their record of 10-19-7 and third place finish in College Hockey America featured a run to the CHA Championship game where Robert Morris lost an overtime heartbreaker to the eventual Frozen Four team, Bemidji State.
