Box Score Villanova, Pa. ? April 18, 2009 ? The Robert Morris University Colonials outscored the Villanova Wildcats in the second-half, but a strong first-half performance by the Wildcats gave them the 16-11 win on Saturday afternoon.
Senior Dan Kerch (Chesterfield, Mo. / DeSmet) and sophomore Corbyn Tao-Brambleby (Coquitlam, B.C. /. Western Reserve Academy) led the Colonials with a trio of goals each. Tao-Brambleby also added an assist for a four point game. Sophomore Trevor Moore (Port Coquitlam, B.C. / Western Reserve Academy) gave a solid performance as well, scoring two goals and dishing out one assist for three points.
Junior goalie Sal Barcia (West Islip, N.Y. / West Islip) finished the contest with an impressive 18 saves and sophomore Keith Lee (Hudson, Ohio / Western Reserve Academy) led the team in ground balls with six, while also going 12-for-21 in the face-off circle.
Villanova started of play just 29 seconds in when Mike Brennan found the RMU net on an unassisted play. The Colonials quickly responded when Kerch took a pass from Tao-Brambleby and beat Wildcat goalie Andrew Diloreto at 1:12 to knot the score 1-1.
Throughout the next six minutes Villanova added two more goals to its collection, while Robert Morris tallied one. Neither squad's defense would let anyone through in the final 7:46 of play to leave the score 3-2 in Villanova's favor heading into the second quarter.
The Wildcats dominated in the second quarter scoring four unanswered goals throughout the first eight minutes of play. Tao-Brambleby was finally able to get a score on the board for RMU with 6:09 left in the quarter. However, Villanova's Tim Langan Jr. scored back-to-back goals and then Matt Bell added another score for the Wildcats before the end of the first-half to give Villanova the 10-3 advantage.
The Colonials entered the second-half with a lot more energy and fired off three unanswered goals in the first five minutes of the half. Sophomore Taylor Caparosa (Annapolis, Md. / Annapolis) scored the first of three goals just 45 seconds into play, which was followed with goals by Tao-Brambleby and Kerch.
Before the end of the quarter, Moore scored two goals and Villanova also scored two goals to bring the score to 12-8 heading into the final stanza of action.
Villanova started things off in the first quarter when Mike Brennan scored his second goal of the day on an unassisted play. Three minutes later Tao-Brambleby scored off an assist from Casey Abbott (San Jose, Calif. / Bellermine Prep.) to bring the game back within four. However, Villanova was able to find the net three more times, while RMU only tallied two more scores to give Villanova the win with a final 16-11 decision.
The Colonials return to Moon Township on Saturday, April 25 to take on Sacred Heart in their final regular-season game. Robert Morris will take this opportunity to honor 10 graduating seniors.
