Littlestown, Pa. (Quail Valley G.C.) -- The Robert Morris University men's golf team posted a team-score of 296 in the second round of the Mount St. Mary's Spring Invitational to finish fifth overall at the 13-team tournament held at Quail Valley Golf Club in Littlestown, Pa. The Colonials eight-over total on the 7,027-yard, par-72 layout was five shots better than their previous season-best of 13-over in the Bucknell Invitational in the first tournament of the fall season.
Sophomore C.G. Mercatoris (Brookville, Pa. / Brookville) second-round 71 marked his third sub-par round of the season and vaulted into a tie for 10th-place with a 151 total. His fourth top-10 finish of the season opened with a round of 80 in rain-soaked conditions on Monday.
Army took the team title by 10 strokes, posting a 591 total led by medalist Matt Krembell's 141 total. The Mount St. Mary's "B" team was second (601) followed by Bryant (603), Monmouth (611), Robert Morris (621), Fairfield and Mount St. Mary's "A" (623), Rider (628), Long Island (629), Fordham and Wagner (655), St. Francis (N.Y.) (685) and Hampton (693).
Senior Adam Farry (Fairfax, Va. / James W. Robinson) had the team's low round of the opening day with a 78 and followed with an 84 to finish one-strke behind Mercatoris at 152, tying him for 12th in the field. Junior Joe Kabana (East Stroudsburg, Pa. / Notre Dame) recovered nine strokes in the tournament's final round, posting a 75 to go with an 84. His 159 total put him in a tie for 31st. Sophomore Michael Walters (Vero Beach, Fla. / John Carroll) matched the 159 total, following an opening round 83 with a 76. Freshman Robbie Holdcroft (Pennsylvania Furnace, Pa. / State College) was 59th overall with 87-83=170.
Shawn Courson (Parker, Pa. / Allegheny-Clarion Valley) played in his first tournament as an individual for the Colonials. He shot 83-80=163 to tied for 46th overall.
