Moon Township, Pa. - Robert Morris University softball team members, freshman pitcher Alexa Bryson (Greensburg, Pa. / Greater Latrobe) and senior outfielder Brooke Panepinto (Belle Vernon, Pa. / Belle Vernon) each earned 2009 All-Northeast Conference (NEC) honors Thursday in a vote of league head coaches. Panepinto earned a spot on the All-NEC First Team for the third straight season, while Bryson picked up mention on the All-NEC Second Team.
Panepinto, who picked up her second District II Academic All-America honor earlier today, joins the All-NEC First Team for the third consecutive year. She also has been recognized twice as a NFCA Louisville Slugger All-Mid Atlantic Regional team member. With a career batting average of .352 heading into the 2009 season, Panepinto ranks first all-time in the Robert Morris record book. Also, her total of 21 homeruns lands her second all-time. Currently, Panepinto is second on the Colonial squad with a .331 batting average. She has posted 43 hits in 130 at-bats with four doubles, one triple and two homers. She leads the team with 12 walks and eight stolen bases.
Joining Panepinto with postseason accolades from the NEC is Bryson. The first-year pitcher was named Pitcher of the Week once, and Rookie of the Week twice during the 2009 campaign. With a record of 19-5, Bryson led the NEC in wins and was second in strikeouts with 184. Her ERA of 2.26 lands her in the fifth slot on the NEC leader board. Bryson pitched 20 complete games during the season and notched four shut-out wins. She has held her opponents to a .250 batting average in 180 innings of work. On May 2, Bryson notched her 19th win making her the fourth pitcher in Colonial softball histroy to record at least 19 wins in a single season.
Under the direction of 19th year head coach Craig Coleman, No. 2 seed Robert Morris will play No. 3 seed Sacred Heart in the first round of the NEC Tournament. The 2009 NEC regular season champions, Long Island University, will host the event at St. John's University in Brooklyn N.Y. RMU's opening game is set for Friday, May 8 at 12:15 p.m.
