University Park, Pa. - Sept. 5, 2009 - On day two of the Nittany Lion Invitational the Robert Morris University Colonials fell to the two-time defending national champions Penn State, 3-0 (25-8, 25-8, 25-10), on Saturday. The loss drops the Colonials to 3-4, while Penn State improves to 5-0.
Penn State started set one on a 10-0 run with PSU's Alisha Glass serving. The Colonials were finally able to side-out with an attack error by the Nittany Lions. Junior Mackenzie Tonn (Fishers, Ind. / Hamilton Southeastern) tallied RMU's first kill of the set to bring the score to 12-4 in Penn State's favor. However, the Nittany Lions tallied 18 kills in the first set to RMU's four to give them a decisive 25-8 win.
Set two was very similar to the first with Penn State topping the Colonials 25-8. Penn State tallied its highest hitting percentage of the match at .650 and recorded 15 kills to RMU's three.
Despite a solid effort by the Colonials, Penn State took set three 25-10 to earn the match win. Although falling to the Nittany Lions in three, the Colonials recorded zero service errors for the first time this season. Tonn led Robert Morris with four kills and five digs.
The Colonials compete in their final match at the Nittany Lion Invitational today at 4:00 p.m. against Buffalo.
