Box Score Pittsburgh, Pa. - Senior forward Maria Stoa (Bloomington, Minn. / Eden Prairie) notched two goals, including the game-winner, as the Robert Morris University women's hockey team opened its season with a bang, taking down No. 10 Providence, 5-4, in a back-and-forth affair Friday night at the RMU Island Sports Center in Pittsburgh, Pa.
Freshman Thea Imbrogno (Etobicoke, Ontario / Mississauga Jr. Chiefs) contributed to the Colonial cause in a big way in her collegiate debut, assisting on the first two RMU goals while scoring one late in the second period that gave Robert Morris the lead for good. Sophomore Dayna Newsom (Oakville, Ontario / Oakville Ice) put home the Colonials' first goal of the season and added an assist while junior Brianna Delaney (Stittsville, Ontario / NCCP Raiders) assisted on two goals, including setting up one for her younger sister, Cobina Delaney (Stittsville, Ontario / Ottawa Senators).
"I am very pleased with how we played tonight," said RMU head coach Nate Handrahan. "We are definitely a work in progress and need to get better in a few areas. Providence is a veteran team and kept coming, but I'm happy we weathered the storm. We need to prepare for tomorrow because they will come out hard."
The tenth-ranked Friars got on the board first, but Robert Morris responded immediately, finding the net just 37 seconds later, as Newsom pounced on a rebound and put it home after Imbrogno's initial shot had been saved. Robert Morris killed off the lone penalty of the first period, helped in large part by sophomore goalie Kristen DiCiocco's (Niagara Falls, Ontario / Stoney Creek Jr. Sabres) five saves during the Friars' man-advantage, and the teams skated into the locker rooms tied, 1-1.
Providence opened the second period with a power-play goal at the 4:31 mark, but the Colonials followed suit again, responding just 3:15 later with a power-play tally of their own. Imbrogno fed Stoa who was cutting across the left circle, and the senior did not miss the opportunity to tie the game.
It appeared the teams would once again head to intermission tied, but Imbrogno had other ideas. She beat the defense, using her speed to skate clear down the right side, and put the puck away as she cut back across the center of the crease with just 15 seconds remaining in the period to give RMU a 3-2 lead.
Robert Morris made sure the Friars were unable to score first once again as the Delaney sisters, along with sophomore Jennifer Kindret (Winnipeg, Manitoba / BC Breakers), teamed for an insurance goal. After receiving the puck, Cobina Delaney made a wraparound move behind the net and was able to hammer the puck into the cage for a two-goal lead. The Colonials added their fifth score courtesy of the power play when Stoa won a faceoff back to sophomore Jamie Joslin (Richmond Hill, Ontario / Aurora Panthers) who promptly returned the puck to Stoa who put it away for the three-goal edge.
The Friars would not go down without a fight, however, as Providence scored a power-play goal at the 15:34 mark and an even strength tally with just 2:13 left to tighten the proceedings. After they earned a faceoff in their offensive zone with 45 seconds left, the Friars called a timeout to prepare a plan of attack. Providence gained control and fired off a flurry of shots, but the Colonials held off the attack as freshman Brandi Pollock (Virden, Manitoba / Westman Wildcats) blocked the first attempt before DiCiocco stopped two more as RMU was finally able to clear the zone to clinch the contest.
DiCiocco stopped 37 shots to earn the victory while freshman Kylie St. Louis (Windsor, Ontario / Southwest Wildcats) and senior Sara O'Malley (Guelph, Ontario / Hamilton Hawks) also added assists on the first and third Colonial goals, respectively.
Robert Morris will look to sweep the series against the Friars Saturday afternoon as the teams will matchup again with the first puck slated to drop at 3:05 p.m.
