Mercatoris Notches Another Top-10; RMU 8th At Lonnie Barton Invitational

Savannah, Ga. / Savannah Quarters Club - The Robert Morris University men's golf team opened the spring portion of its season with an eighth-place finish at the Lonnie Barton Memorial Invitational hosted by Long Island University at th Savannah Quarters Club in Savannah, Ga. Junior C.G. Mercatoris (Brookville, Pa. / Brookville) tied for eighth at the eight team event, posting his fifth top-10 of his junior year.

Mercatoris has finished in the top-10 of each of the five tournaments that he has finished this season - the junior withdrew from the Dayton Flyer Invitational - averaging a sixth-place finish and a 75.6 stroke average. He posted team low scores on each day, opening with a 79 and shaving one stroke for a 78 in the second and final round.

Longwood University tamed the 7,016-yard, par-72 course to win the event by nine strokes, posting a team score of 621. Laval, a Canadian University, was second with a 630 total. Bryant was one stroke back at 631 followed by High Point (639), Long Island (660), Emory (667), Fairfield (672) and Robert Morris (673). Bryant's Jason Thresher took medalist honors with a two-day total of 150.

Freshman Brandon Pompeani (Aliquippa, Pa. / Hopewell) tied for 23rd shooting a total of 164. He opened with an 84 before finding four strokes the following day to post 80. Junior Michael Walters (Vero Beach, Fla. / John Carroll), playing as an individual, carded a 168 (81-87) to take 31st.

Freshman Brock Pompeani (Aliquippa, Pa. / Hopewell) tied for 35th, recovering from an opening round 91 to card 82 and a 173 total. Senior Joe Kabana (East Stroudsburg, Pa. / Notre Dame) teid for 42nd (89-90=179) followed by freshman Max Cahn (Nyack, N.Y. / Nyack) in 46th (93-91=184).

The Colonials next play in the Butler Sping Invitational scheduled for March 22-23.
