Colonials Sweep Pioneers at Sacred Heart

Fairfield, Conn. - The Robert Morris University softball team continued its conference swing in Connecticut as the team visted Sacred Heart for two games on Sunday afternoon at Pioneer Park.  It took nine innings, but the Colonials finally earned the win in game one as they slipped past the Pioneers, 1-0.  In the second contest, RMU surged with a six-run fourth inning to power past Sacred Heart, 10-3.

Robert Morris, now 17-13 and 7-2 in the NEC, was once again lead by strong pitching from Alexa Bryson (Greensburg, Pa. / Greater Latrobe).  In her second shut-out of the year, Bryson struck out 13 and allowed just five hits in nine innings of work.

In what seemed to look like a repeat of yesterday's opening game with Quinnipiac, the Colonials and Sacred Heart played eight scoreless innings before RMU finally capitalized on a Pioneer error to win the game. Senior Megan Picinic (Cliffside, NJ / Immaculate Heart) started off the ninth frame with a double to center field, and scored the game-winner on a fielding error by SHU when Kayla Crooks (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Brashear) singled to center.

Bryson then escaped the ninth with Pioneers on second and third to close out the win for RMU.

Sacred Heart took a quick one-score lead in the second game as they tallied a run in the bottom of the first.

However, Robert Morris batted though the order to touch home six times in the fourth frame. Jessica Calderone (Wilmington, Del. / St. Marks) started off the inning with a single. Freshman Maritza Jimenez (Vineland, NJ / Vineland) also recorded a single, while Allie Patton (Poland, Ohio / Poland) doubled to left field to score a trio of runs.

The Pioneers got one back in the fourth, but the Colonials answered with another two in the sixth to make the score, 8-2.  With two outs, pitcher Annie Dubovec (Chagrin Falls, Ohio / Kenston) doubled down the left field line to score Calderone and Jaci Timko (Houston, Pa. / Chartiers-Houston).

Robert Morris followed up with its two final runs in the seventh thanks to a RBI-triple from Jessica Tanigawa (Marysville, Wash. / Marysville-Pitchuck)  and a double by Crooks to ensure the,10-3, win.

Dubovec got the win in the circle as she allowed three hits, three runs and struck out three.

On Wednesday afternoon, the Colonials travel to Kent State University to take on the Golden Flashes in a doubleheader starting at 3:00 p.m.
