Pittsburgh, Pa. - On Saturday, the Robert Morris University track and field team hosted the annual Bennie Benson Invitational at the RMU Island Sports Center. As the home squad, the women's team had a strong showing as they claimed numerous top-ten results, including an impressive 19 top-three finishes.
In the event, the Colonials welcomed six other squads including West Virginia and NEC foe, Saint Francis (Pa.), to their home facility.
Hilary Monger (Reading, Pa. / Holy Name) dominated the two hurdle events as she seized first-place in the 400m race with a time of 1:06.83. She also took second in the 100m hurdles with her final time of 15:68.
Kristie Domis (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Baldwin) earned gold in the 1500m run with a time of 4:58.18. Fellow distance runner, Deb Ostrander (Denton, Md. / North Carolina) took third in the 1500m race with a mark of 5:02.59. Ostrander also placed with a silver result in the 800m run with her time of 2:25.29.
In the javelin throw, Ashley Turici (Zelienople, Pa. / Seneca Valley) claimed first with a throw of 42.66m. Rachel Herbstritt (Wilcox, Pa. / Johnsonburg) followed in the second-slot with a hurl of 36.69m.
The Colonials took first and third in the long jump as Justene Delman (Bellaire, Ohio / Saint John's Central) won the event with a jump of 5.09m. Tausha Bowser (Parker, Pa. / Seton Hill) came in third with a jump of 5.02m. Delman also took second in a track event with a second-place finish in the 400m dash.
Taylor Crawford (Woodbury, Pa. / Northern Bedford) won the triple jump with a 11.26m mark, while Aisha Chisholm (New Rochelle, N.Y. / New Rochelle) slipped in the third-spot as she jumped 10.89m.
Continuing the successful day in the field events, Erica Schmidt (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Baldwin) earned second in the pole vault as she cleared 3.45m. Casey Folga (Erie, Pa. / Harborcreek) finished in third with a 3.20m vault.
Megan Green (Bellaire, Ohio / Bellaire) placed the shot put as she ended in second with a 12.40m throw.
The Robert Morris relay teams took second in both the 4x100m and 4x400m races.
On Friday and Saturday, April 16-17, the team will visit James Madison University for the two-day, JMU Scored Event in Harrisonburg, Va.
