Colonials Sweep Morgan State in Tournament Finale

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Moon Township, Pa. - The Robert Morris University volleyball team closed the 2010 Duquesne / Robert Morris Invitational in strong fashion with a sweep of visiting Morgan State, 25-23, 25-23, 25-16, in the John Jay Center Saturday night. At the conclusion of the match, senior captain Amanda Graham (Melbourne, Fla. / Eau Gallie) was named to the all-tournament team.

In the opening match it played Saturday, Robert Morris (2-2) was victorious in game one, but could not maintain its momentum and fell to Lehigh (3-1), 23-25, 25-19, 25-20, 25-18.

The Colonials refused to let the morning defeat carry over as they quickly pulled ahead in the nightcap against Morgan State (1-3). As in its victory Friday, RMU received contributions from a variety of sources in its defeat of the Bears as six players registered at least four kills.

Graham led the squad with a team-high eight kills and also added a career-high eight digs. Sophomore opposite Amanda Craig (Houston, Texas / St. Agnes Academy) drilled seven kills, committing just a single error, and led RMU in hitting percentage at .375. Sophomore Una Japundza (Rovinj, Croatia / Zvane Crnja) notched career-highs of five kills and five digs despite only playing in two games.

Robert Morris jumped out of the gates quickly, grabbing a 10-4 edge on the Bears as four players collected kills during the run. The Bears battled back and pulled to within two points at 23-21, but a Graham slam sealed the first game for RMU.

The second game was much tighter in the early going as the squads found themselves knotted at 9-9. The Colonials used a 7-1 run, highlighted by two kills each from Graham and Craig and two aces from Japundza not long after entering the match, to take a 16-10 edge. The Bears remained resilient, though, and were able to even the game at 22 apiece. RMU won three of the final four points to claim the second game, with Graham once again providing the finishing kill.

The third game followed suit from the second in the beginning as the teams were tied, 10-10, as neither was able to gain more than a three-point lead. However, Robert Morris was finally able to break the resolve of the Bears, winning 15 of the final 21 points to seal the match.

Ashley Johnson led Morgan State with nine kills and Jourdan Lemons added 25 assists and 12 digs for the Bears.

Graham recorded a team-high 37 kills for the tournament and led RMU in hitting with a remarkable .380 for the weekend in being named to the all-tournament team. Her selection came just two days after she was named as one of the final 30 candidates, and the only one from the Northeast Conference (NEC), for the inaugural Lowe's Senior CLASS Volleyball Award. She also recorded 12 blocks in the tournament, bringing her career total just one shy of becoming the fifth Colonial to reach the 300-block plateu.

In its opener Saturday, RMU held Lehigh to a .195 hitting percentage, but it was not enough to keep the Mountain Hawks from claiming the victory. Graham led Robert Morris with team highs of 10 kills and a .304 hitting percentage while also adding two service aces and three blocks. Freshman setter Alex Deines (Centennial, Colo. / Littleton) contributed a team-high 21 assists, and sophomore outside hitter Lindsey Monger (Rising Sun, Md. / Rising Sun)  put down seven kills while recording a team-high 14 digs.

The first game was extremely tight with neither team ever gaining more than a three-point advantage. RMU was able to make the plays when it counted down the stretch, helped by two kills from junior Hannah Veith (Columbus, Ohio / Worthington) in the final three points, to pull out the game one victory.

Lehigh was able to maintain a small, but steady lead throughout the early portion of the second game. A Graham ace closed RMU's gap to 16-14, but the Mountain Hawks reeled off four straight points to take a firm six-point margin that would hold up for the remainder of the game.

RMU staged a comeback in the third game, winning seven of eight points, led by Monger's three kills, to erase a six-point deficit (17-11) and level the match at 18-18. Lehigh was able to regroup, however, closing the game on a 7-2 run to take the 2-1 edge in games.

The final score of the fourth game was not entirely indicative of the close play as the Colonials trailed by just a single point, 16-15, more than halfway through the game. The Mountain Hawks were again able to pick up their level as the game continued and closed strongly to take the match.

Lehigh was led Angelika Kopacz's 17 kills and 19 digs.

Robert Morris will have nearly a week off before it takes the court again. It will travel to Muncie, Ind. next weekend to participate in the Ball State Tournament where it will meet Oakland (Mich.), the host Cardinals, and Tennessee State over two days of competition, Sept. 3 and 4.
