Robert Morris Drops Pair

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Niagara, N.Y. / Buffalo, N.Y. - The Robert Morris University volleyball team dropped a pair of matches Friday on the first day of competition at the Canisius / Niagara Tournament in western New York.

Robert Morris (3-6) fought valiantly in its tournament opener against undefeated Big Ten foe Indiana (7-0), but wound up on the short end of a 3-0 decision. The Colonials were unable to rebound in the nightcap as RMU fell, 3-0, to host Canisius (4-6).

In its first match of the day, sophomore outside hitter Lindsey Monger (Rising Sun, Md. / Rising Sun) led the Colonials with nine kills while senior opposite Addie Jennings (Santa Barbara, Calif. / Dos Pueblos) hit .417 by adding five kills on 12 attempts without committing an error. Senior captain Charla Drabant (Wheaton, Ill. / Wheaton North) collected a match-high 15 digs along with three blocks while freshman Alex Deines (Centennial, Colo. / Littleton) had a team-high 17 assists and added five digs.

RMU fell behind early in the first game as the Hoosiers won six of the first seven points and extended their edge before closing out a 25-16 victory.

In game two, Robert Morris rallied from an early five-point deficit to tie the game at 17. After senior captain Amanda Graham (Melbourne, Fla. / Eau Gallie) and Jennings combined on a block, RMU trailed by just a lone point, 21-20, heading into the final stretch, but Indiana finished strongly and pulled out a 25-21 win.

The Colonials gave the Hoosiers an even firmer test in the third game as they reversed an 8-4 Indiana lead into a 15-12 RMU edge. Indiana responded with its own run and was on the brink of victory, holding a 24-20 lead. However, Robert Morris showed firm resolve and saved four consecutive match points to knot the game at 24. The Colonials couldn't quite get over the hump as the Hoosiers used a kill and a block to seal the match.

Jordan Haverly led Indiana with 13 kills.

Robert Morris had several players post strong offensive performances in its match against the Golden Griffins. Graham hit an astounding .526 as she collected 11 kills on 19 attempts with only a lone error. Junior middle blocker Hannah Veith (Columbus, Ohio / Worthington) hit .500 with six kills on eight attempts while Monger once again led the Colonials in kills by recording a match-high tying 13 while hitting .318. The Colonials hit .253 as a team, which was their highest hitting percentage away from home since 2008. Deines once again led RMU with a team-high 18 assists.

Robert Morris trailed by seven near the middle of its first game with Canisius, but Monger provided a kill and two aces to spark a Colonial run and close the gap to just two points at 18-16. The Golden Griffins were able to regroup and hold on to a 25-22 victory.

A Graham kill brought RMU to within a single point, 11-10, in the second game, but Canisius went on an 8-0 spurt to give itself a cushion to finish off game two and held on for a 25-18 victory.

The Colonials led throughout much of game three and opened up a four-point edge at 13-9. Canisius rallied and knotted the match, 18-18, with each squad seven points from the win. The Golden Griffins made plays down the stretch and held off RMU, 25-22, to clinch the match.

Samantha Good led Canisius with 13 kills.

Robert Morris will look to bounce back Saturday afternoon as it plays its final match of the tournament at 2 p.m. against Colgate at Niagara University.
