Staten Island, N.Y. - The Robert Morris University football team pushed its winning streak to three Saturday afternoon with another come-from-behind victory, scoring 30 unanswered points in the second half to record a 30-9 win over Wagner at Wagner College Stadium.
RMU improves to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in the Northeast Conference with the victory, while the Seahawks slipped to 1-2 overall and 0-1 in the conference.
Wagner built a 9-0 lead at halftime on the strength of a 41-yard field goal by David Lopez at the 6:53 mark of the first quarter and a 33-yard touchdown pass from Nick Doscher to Justin Matthews with just 1:46 remaining before halftime. The extra point attempt by Lopez after the touchdown by Matthews hit the right upright and bounced away, helping keep RMU's deficit in single digits.
The Colonials held possession of the ball for just 12:09 in the first half and struggled offensively, compiling just 111 total yards.
RMU did a complete role reversal in the second half, racking up 279 yards of total offense and scoring 30 points while the defense forced four turnovers.
Robert Morris finally cracked the scoreboard with 5:32 remaining in the third quarter when senior kicker Garrett Clawson (Duncansville, Pa. / Hollidaysburg) capped an 11-play, 66-yard drive with his first field goal of the season, a 31-yard trifecta.Â
The Seahawks stalled on their next possession, and on the fifth play of RMU's following drive sophomore quarterback Jeff Sinclair (Natrona Heights, Pa. / Highlands) faked a handoff to senior halfback Myles Russ (Boca Raton, Fla. / West Boca), rolled to his right and connected with a wide open T.J. Green (Stamford, Conn. / Milford Academy) 15 yards down field. Green split the defense and galloped 65 yards to the end zone to give the Colonials their first lead of the afternoon, 10-9.
On Wagner's ensuing possession Doscher was leveled by sophomore linebacker Brad Banas (Houston, Pa. / Chartiers-Houston) on an option play, knocking the signal caller out of the game. Backup Tyler Newberry took over, and on his second play under center he was sacked by sophomore defensive lineman Nolan Nearhoof (Gibsonia, Pa. / Mars Area) and fumbled. Senior linebacker Robert Williams (Randallstown, Md. / Baltimore Polytechnic) recovered for Robert Morris at the 23-yard line of the Seahawks.
The offense capitalized, as two players later Sinclair hit junior wide receiver Jamie Cobb (Casa Grande, Ariz. / Scottsdale Community College) for a 31-yard touchdown pass and a 17-9 RMU advantage.Â
Robert Morris held Wagner to its first three-and-out of the afternoon on the next possession for the Seahawks, and Sinclair followed by marching the Colonials 78 yards on eight plays to help give RMU a 23-9 lead with an eight-yard touchdown strike to Cobb.
Doscher returned under center for Wagner with the Seahawks trailing by 14 but tossed a trio of interceptions in the final 6:34 of regulation, including a pair to redshirt senior safety Michael Landers (Springdale, Pa. / Springdale).
The second pick by Landers was returned 27 yards to the Wagner 19-yard line, and Sinclair again helped Robert Morris capitalize on the great field position. His career-high fourth touchdown pass of the game, a six-yard toss to junior tight end Shadrae King (McKeesport, Pa. / McKeesport) with 1:29 to play, gave RMU a 30-9 lead.
Sinclair finished 15-for-27 passing for 241 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions, while Cobb recorded a game-high six receptions for 76 yards and two scores. King added five catches for 34 yards and a touchdown, while Green finished with his first career 100-yard receiving game thanks to just a pair of receptions for 112 yards and a score.
Russ fell five yards shy of his third straight 100-yard rushing game by posting 95 yards on the ground on 19 carries, while redshirt senior Raphael Johnson (Clinton, Md. / Charles H. Flowers) rushed nine times for 30 yards.
Defensively the Colonials held their second straight NEC opponent to less than 100 yards rushing while forcing five turnovers and recording five sacks. In addition to the pair of picks by Landers, Banas and junior Alex Tarr (Bethel Park, Pa. / Bethel Park) each recorded their first career interceptions.
Landers tied for team-high honors in tackles with seven, joining Nolan Nearhoof and senior linebacker Elias Navarro (Fort Lauderdale, Fla. / South Plantation). Joining Nearhoof in the sack parade was Banas, Williams and sophomore defensive lineman Connor Sullivan (Washington, D.C. / St. John's College High School), while seniors Gavin Marshall (Brooklyn, N.Y. / Bishop Ford Central Catholic) and Mike Lovely (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Lovely) teamed up for one.
Robert Morris closes out a stretch to begin its 2010 campaign of four of its first five games on the road Saturday, Oct. 2, by looking for its fourth straight win with a 1:00 p.m. kickoff against in-state rival Saint Francis at DeGol Field in Loretto, Pa.
