PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The Robert Morris University men's ice hockey team earned its fifth sweep of the season Saturday by knocking off Connecticut, 4-2, at the Island Sports Center.
Robert Morris fell into an early hole against the Huskies (7-12-3, 7-7-1) Saturday but the Colonials (14-7-2, 9-5-2) rallied with four consecutive goals to pick their second sweep of the season against an Atlantic Hockey foe. Four different Colonials found the net and three posted multi-point nights as RMU earned its second sweep at the Island Sports Center this season.
Brant Harris gave UConn the early first period lead with a power-play goal at the 15:39 mark of the frame. The first looked like it would end with the Huskies holding a 1-0 lead but Nathan Longpre (Peterborough, Ontario / Mahoning Valley Phantoms) tied the game with his 12th goal of the season with just 1:09 left on the clock. The score did not stay tied long as Zach Hervato (Stittsville, Ontario / Smiths Falls Bears) found the net 36 seconds later to give RMU a 2-1 advantage heading into the first intermission.
The Colonials carried the late first-period momentum into the second period as Scott Kobialko (Spruce Grove, Alberta / Camrose Kodiaks) gave Robert Morris a two-goal advantage with his second goal of the season. Ron Cramer (New Wilmington, Pa. / Indiana Ice) stretched the lead to 4-1 with his power-play goal at the 11:28 mark of the second frame. UConn's Billy Latta cut into the lead at the 13:26 mark of the second period with his sixth goal of the season but that is all the offense UConn could summon.
The Colonials and the Huskies skated to a scoreless third period. Robert Morris goalie Eric Levine (Wheeling, Ill. /Pembroke Lumber Kings) continued his solid play making 30 saves on the night, including 13 in the final period. The RMU netminders also posted nine saves on the penalty kill.
Robert Morris extended its penalty kill streak to 11 before having it snapped by Harris' first-period goal. The win for the Colonials is their 14th of the season one short of tying the program record for wins in a single season.
The Colonials hit the road next weekend as they travel to West Point, N.Y. Jan. 21-22 for a series with conference rival Army.
