Veith Leads ?Unblockable? Colonial Effort in Sweep

Box Score

Moon Township, Pa. - On the day that the Robert Morris University volleyball team held its 'Senior Day' ceremony for one of its best student-athletes in program history, captain Hannah Veith (Columbus, Ohio / Worthington) surely produced a fitting performance, leading an 'unblockable' Colonial attack with her .652 hitting percentage in a comprehensive sweep of visiting Quinnipiac, 25-9, 25-20, 25-7, Saturday afternoon at the Charles L. Sewall Center.

Veith, who is RMU's lone senior this season, helped Robert Morris hit at an incredible .404 mark as a team as the Colonials were not blocked a single time in more than 100 attacks. It marked the first time in at least its last 286 matches in which an opponent was unable to record a single block against the Colonial offense. Robert Morris' hitting percentage was its best in its past 101 matches as RMU hit at least .333 in every set.

RMU limited Quinnipiac to just 36 points for the match and has allowed just 70 points combined in its last two home matches. The Colonials also held the Bobcats to a .038 hitting percentage for the match, the fifth time this season RMU has held its opposition under the .050 mark.

"My hope is that we're learning from [last weekend], and that we can continue to move forward," head coach Dale Starr said. "I thought we did a lot of things really, really well today. I thought we served extremely effectively, we blocked really well, Hannah Veith obviously had a monster night...but to have three players in double-figure kills and four players in double-figure digs in a three-game match, that's pretty solid volleyball."

Veith led the Colonials with a match-high 16 kills and a match-best nine blocks as she reset her career high for kills in a three-set match. She registered only one hitting error while posting her 20th double-digit kill performance in the past 27 matches. Veith, who has hit at least .550 in five of the team's past eight matches, is now hitting .376 for the season, which would be the second-best single-season mark in program history. Her nine blocks also pushed her career total block total to 420, which moved her into third place all-time at RMU.

Junior Lindsey Monger (Rising Sun, Md. / Rising Sun) joined Veith in climbing lists in the RMU record book by nailing 11 kills while also tallying a team-high 13 digs to record her team-best 17th double-double of the campaign, tied for the most in a season by a Colonial since 2003. Monger's kill total pushed her 2011 sum to 369, which moved her into ninth place in single-season RMU history. She hit .360 and added a match-best two aces while registering her 12th double-double in the past 15 matches. Monger also continued her streak of double-figure dig efforts, extending her mark to 17 consecutive matches.

Freshman Hannah Hoffman (Parker, Colo. / Ponderosa) was largely responsible for setting up Veith, Monger and the remainder of the Colonial attack as she tallied a match-high 37 assists and added 11 digs to collect her seventh double-double of the season and her third such effort in the past four matches. With the performance, Hoffman increased her season assist total to 1,117, becoming just the third Colonial in school history to record a figure that high. The rookie also aided the offense directly by putting down four kills on just six attempts without an error to hit at least .400 for the eighth time in the past 12 matches.

Robert Morris combined for 49 kills and 47 assists for the match, both program bests for a three-set match since the NCAA made the change from 30 points being necessary to win a set. The Colonials were also quite stout defensively--they notched 57 digs, their best mark in a NEC sweep since 2008, and registered 10 blocks, a new season high for a sweep, and the ninth time in their past 17 matches overall in which they have hit double figures in that category.

Despite dropping the very first rally of the match, Robert Morris exploded out of the gates, winning 12 of the next 13 points to take a double-digit lead almost immediately. Hoffman had two kills and five assists while Veith summed three kills and two blocks during this stretch. With RMU still up by 10 points at 18-8, the Colonials basically sealed the set by winning six straight points to push their margin to 16. RMU held the Bobcats to a -.111 hitting mark during the opening set.

Quinnipiac kept it much more competitive in the second set and actually held the lead in the early going. With the Bobcats leading 10-6, RMU erupted for eight consecutive points, beginning a 13-2 run in which Veith contributed four kills and two blocks to give the Colonials a 19-12 lead. Quinnipiac fought back, though, using a 6-1 spurt to cut the RMU advantage back down to just two, 20-18. Robert Morris was able to close out the set by winning five of the next seven exchanges as Monger and freshman Sydney Sizemore (Covington, Ky. / Holy Cross) each had a pair of kills in this closing stretch.

Freshman Erica Robb (Novi, Mich. / Novi) helped RMU get off to a quick start in the third set as she collected two kills and two blocks as the Colonials won each of the first five points. With Robert Morris still up by five, 10-5, the Colonials went on an striking run, claiming 15 of the final 17 points, including 10 in a row at one point, to comfortably cruise to the victory. RMU hit at a remarkable .567 clip in the final set while registering 17 kills.

Robb finished with 10 kills, her ninth double-figure kill match of the season, and added seven digs and a season-high tying five blocks.

Sizemore tallied five kills on just 13 attempts without an error to hit .385, her third consecutive match at at least .300, and added a season-high four assists.

Along with Hoffman and Monger, junior Andrea Catucci (Davidsonville, Md. / Archbishop Spalding) and freshman Melissa Bograd (Lemont, Ill. / Lemont) both reached double figures in digs to mark the fourth-consecutive match in which a quartet of Colonials recorded double digits in that category. Bograd had 12 to post double figures in the dig department for the 13th straight match while Catucci added 10 to hit double figures for the fifth-consecutive outing.

RMU moved to 16-2 all-time against Quinnipiac as the Colonials swept the season series with the victory.

With Central Connecticut State's five-set victory over St. Francis (N.Y.), the Colonials are assured of the fourth seed for the upcoming Northeast Conference (NEC) Tournament to be held next weekend. RMU will play at either Long Island or Sacred Heart in an NEC Semifinal Saturday, Nov. 19, at a time to be determined.

Robert Morris will play a part in determining its matchup for next weekend as it hosts Sacred Heart in its regular-season finale Sunday. First serve is set for 1:00 p.m. as RMU looks for the regular-season sweep over the Pioneers.
