PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Dec. 11, 2011 - Behind
a two-goal performance by freshman forward Cody Wydo, the Robert Morris men's hockey team topped Canisius on Sunday night
to extend its program-best unbeaten streak to seven games. A three-point
showing by the Colonials over the weekend reclaims third place in the Atlantic
Hockey Association while RMU now trails second place Mercyhurst and RIT by
two-points and league leader Air Force by three points.
“Tonight was a good win for us, and we've
really found our identity lately. Kudos to our guys for setting a new program
record,” Colonials head coach Derek Schooley said. “It feels good to win a couple games, and our guys have been
putting in the work day-in and day-out to get it done.”
The first period saw the two teams
skate fairly evenly as Robert Morris held a slight advantage in both shots – 12
to nine – and power-play opportunities – two to one. The best opportunity for the Colonials came
off the stick of junior defenseman Tyler Hinds (Orleans, Ontario / Nepean Raiders) as he slapped a shot on Canisius
goaltender Dan Morrison, who flashed his glove to snag the puck before it hit
the back of the net.
Within the first five minutes of the
second period, the Colonials jumped out to a two-goal lead thanks to two goals
from freshman forwardll Cody Wydo (Aen
Park, Mich. / Motor City Metal Jackets) and two assists from Cody Crichton (Palgrave, Ontario / Brampton
Capitals). Wydo got the scoring
going less than a minute into the period as he deposited a pass from Crichton
past the outstretched leg of the Canisius goaltender. Wydo's second tally of the evening occurred just
over four minutes into the period as Crichton again found Wydo in the slot with
a no-look pass. Wydo, who moved into a
tie for the team lead with his sixth and seventh goal of the season, was again
able to beat Morrison to the blocker side with a one-timer. Adam Brace (Cobden, Ontario / Canisius College) was credited with the secondary
assist on the play as he passed to Crichton on the boards. The Golden Griffins would cut the Colonial
lead in half as Mackenzie Scott picked up his first collegiate goal after
beating Colonial senior netminder Brooks Ostergard (Chargin Falls, Ohio / Bay State Breakers) with a slap shot that
rang off the post and in.
The third period played out much like
the first as both teams were held off the scoreboard. Canisius (4-10-3, 4-5-2) had a golden
opportunity to tie the game as a shot got behind Ostergard but bounced off both
posts before popping out the other side.
The Colonials withstood the Golden Griffins attack with an extra skater
for the final minute and held them to no real scoring opportunities.
Ostergard picked up his fourth win of
the season while saving 24 of 25 shots. The
senior is 4-0-2 in his last six starts. Morrison fell to 2-6-1 on the season
for Canisius after making 28 saves in the loss.
With Miami sweeping Ohio State this
weekend, Robert Morris currently owns the second-longest active unbeaten streak
in the nation behind defending national champion Minnesota-Duluth's 14 games.
The Colonials blanked Canisius on three power-play chances in the win –
maintaining the nation's best killing percentage at 94.3 (67-for-70). Robert
Morris was 0-for-4 on the power play.
The Colonials will return to the ice
this upcoming Saturday as they host RIT at Clearview Arena. Face-off is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
