Box Score Moon Township, Pa. - The Robert Morris University men's lacrosse team did not trail for the first 58 minutes of its contest, but the Colonials were unable to hold off a late charge by Hobart, courtesy of multiple man-up goals, as the Statesmen pulled out a 9-8 victory in non-conference action at Joe Walton Stadium Saturday afternoon.
Despite the defeat, it was a memorable day for the Colonial faithful as senior Corbyn Tao-Brambleby's (Coquitlam, British Columbia / Western Reserve Academy) first-quarter goal moved him out of a tie and into sole possession of first place on RMU's all-time goals scored list. Tao-Brambleby's 92nd career score, which moved him clear of the previous record holder, Andrew Watt, came with 1:24 remaining in the first from the edge of the crease after a superb pass from junior captain Kiel Matisz (Stoney Creek, Ontario / Saltfleet).
While Tao-Brambleby established a new mark, senior captain Trevor Moore (Port Coquitlam, British Columbia / Western Reserve Academy) equaled the previous record total due to another strong offensive performance. After collecting a hat trick at No. 3 North Carolina last weekend, Moore put home four tallies Saturday to move his career goal total to 91. It marked the ninth game of his career in which he has registered at least four tallies, and he also collected a career-high four ground balls.
After it took over 11 minutes for the teams to split the game's opening two goals, RMU tallied back-to-back scores within less than a minute as junior Kyle Buchanan (Nepean, Ontario / John McCrae) and Tao-Brambleby found the twine.
Hobart came back with a 3-1 run that culminated when it knotted the game at 4-4 with 7:52 left in the first half.
The Statesmen's run ended abruptly as their fourth goal proved to be their final tally for over 25 minutes as the RMU defense shut down Hobart for the remainder of the half and the entire third quarter.
A pair of goals by Moore within a 1:25 span in the closing minutes of the second put the Colonials back up by two, a margin which they would carry into the locker room.
Sophomore Connor Martin's (Maumee, Ohio / St. John's Jesuit) first career point provided the game's only offense of the third quarter when he scored in the opening minute of the second half.
Moore's fourth score gave the Colonials a four-goal advantage with 14:31 to play, but the Statesmen finally woke up out of their offensive slumber, aided by a trio of penalties called on RMU.
Hobart proceeded to score three man-up goals over the final 13 minutes and notched what proved to be the game-winner with 1:42 remaining.
For the second consecutive game sophomore defenseman Ben Lewis (Cazenovia, N.Y. / Cazenovia Central) forced a turnover in the closing minutes of regulation to give RMU a chance to tie, but Robert Morris was unable to find the equalizer as a trio of Colonial shots was wide of the cage in the final minute. Robert Morris had a last-gasp attempt go by the boards when it successfully cleared with fewer than five seconds remaining but could not get a shot off before the horn sounded.
Matisz tied his career high with three assists and recorded his seventh four-point game in his last 12 overall.
Buchanan (30), Matisz (21) and Moore (32) all extended their consecutive point streaks after each had entered the week ranked among the top 10 nationally in that department.
Long-stick midfielder Mike Meagher (Chesterfield, Mo. / St. Louis University) recorded a career-high four ground balls and shared game-high honors with Lewis with three caused turnovers.
Robert Morris had the edge in both shots on goal and clear attempts and also committed 11 fewer turnovers than Hobart (23-12).
The Statesmen were the beneficiaries of six man-up opportunities but were not whistled for a single penalty.
Robert Morris will return to action next Saturday, Feb. 26, when it hosts Manhattan. The faceoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
