Box Score Hamilton, N.Y. - The Robert Morris University men's lacrosse team scored four consecutive fourth-quarter goals to turn a three-goal deficit into a lead, but the Colonials were unable to keep the momentum going as Colgate rallied for a 14-12 decision in non-conference action Tuesday evening at Tyler's Field.
Redshirt senior captain Patrick Smith (Westminster, Md. / Westminster) led the offensive effort for RMU with a season-high four goals on just six shots. It marked the seventh occasion in his career in which Smith has scored at least four goals in a contest, and he has now achieved the feat in four separate seasons.
Senior captain Trevor Moore (Port Coquitlam, British Columbia / Western Reserve Academy) and junior captain Kiel Matisz (Stoney Creek, Ontario / Saltfleet) both recorded three points on a goal and two assists for the Colonials. Moore now has tallied at least three points in 19 of his last 21 games while Matisz registered his 12th career game with at least three points.
Robert Morris raced out to a strong start as the Colonials scored early and often in the first quarter. Six different RMU players netted a tally in the opening 15 minutes, and Robert Morris had opened up a 6-2 advantage after the first frame.
Colgate settled in, though, and began to claw its way back into the contest with a pair of goals within the first three minutes of the second quarter to cut the deficit to 6-4.
After the teams had combined for 10 goals in the opening 27:58, suddenly neither team could find the cage for the remainder of the first half. The Colonials and Raiders combined on just 13 shots in the second quarter, and neither team scored until early in the third session, nearly 15 minutes worth of scoreless action.
The Raiders began the second half in a similar vein to RMU in the first as Colgate scored four goals in under nine minutes to assume an 8-6 lead. After the Colonials came back to knot the score, 8-8, near the end of the third, Colgate recorded a trio of tallies in the final 37 seconds of the quarter to carry a three-goal lead into the final stanza.
Robert Morris refused to back down, though, as the Colonials came charging back with four straight goals, including two by Smith, to retake the lead with under 12 minutes to play. The Raiders would stop the bleeding just over two minutes later to once again tie the game, 12-12.
With the game tied and the clock winding down, each team had its opportunities over the final 10 minutes to move ahead, and the Raiders were finally successful as Colgate scored with 3:16 left to take the lead for good.
Despite its attempts, Robert Morris was unable to get possession for a chance at a tying score until the final half-minute--after the Raiders were able to add an empty-net insurance goal.
Junior Kyle Buchanan (Nepean, Ontario / John McCrae) scored a first-quarter goal for RMU to join Matisz and Moore in extending their consecutive point streaks, each of which is now at least 23 games long.
For the fifth consecutive game, Robert Morris produced a higher percentage than its opponent in the clearing department as RMU held Colgate to just a 13-for-18 mark while the Colonials were successful on 19-of-22 attempts. Robert Morris also had fewer turnovers than its opponent for the third time in four games after entering the week tied for fourth in fewest turnovers per game nationally.
Redshirt sophomore goalie Charles Ruppert (Long Island, N.Y. / Massapequa) tied his career high with 11 saves for the Colonials.
Junior Kevin Brownell (Burlington, Ontario / Central) recorded his second multi-point game of the season for RMU with a goal and an assist.
After having over a week off, Robert Morris will continue its three-game road trip with its first-ever contest at Jacksonville University. RMU won a thrilling 18-17 affair over the Dolphins in 2010 and will look to make it back-to-back victories next Wednesday, March 9.
