Teaneck, N.J. - Robert Morris University softball head coach Craig Coleman, M.D., won his 500th career game for the Colonials Sunday afternoon as RMU comfortably swept a Northeast Conference (NEC) doubleheader from Fairleigh Dickinson, 7-2 and 7-0, on a cold and windy day at the FDU Softball Field.
Coleman, who owns six conference tournament titles with RMU, became the first head coach in any sport in Robert Morris University history to reach this incredible milestone win total with the Game One victory.
"It's a great honor to have coached dozens of incredible student-athletes at RMU," Coleman said. "I may have reached my 500-win milestone, but I don't have a single RBI. It's a credit to all the kids that have played in our program."
"We've known for a couple of weeks we were approaching Coach Coleman's 500th win when he had no idea," redshirt junior captain Jessica Calderone (Wilmington, Del / St. Mark's) said. "Seeing the surprise on his face was great, especially when he said, 'Let's make it 501'. My teammates and I are very excited to be a part of his 500th victory and proud to say we have played under RMU's winningest coach."
Calderone helped her coach's cause by having a great offensive day, going 4-for-6 at the plate with a home run, a double, three runs scored along with two sacrifices.
Robert Morris took control right from the start in Game One as it plated two in the first. Junior outfielder Allie Patton (Poland, Ohio / Poland) singled up the middle with one out and advanced to second on a sacrifice by Calderone. With two outs, senior Annie Dubovec (Chagrin Falls, Ohio / Kenston) delivered a run-scoring single to left and advanced to second on the throw to the plate before sophomore Maritza Jimenez (Vineland, N.J. / Vineland) followed with a RBI single to center.
In the bottom half, junior Alexa Bryson (Greensburg, Pa. / Latrobe Area) worked her way out of a jam by leaving a pair of runners in scoring position with an inning-ending groundout.
After a scoreless second, Calderone led off the third with an opposite-field double to right center. Dubovec followed with a hard ground ball into left field, sending Calderone to third, and then proceeded to swipe second. Jimenez then drilled a double into left center, just missing a home run by a few feet, to double the Colonial advantage.
FDU got a pair back in the home half by stringing together consecutive two-out doubles after a walk.
Calderone continued her strong day at the dish by leading off the fifth with her second home run of the season, a lined shot that cleared the fence just to the left of center. After two were gone, Robert Morris added to its lead when junior catcher Sarah Capp (McKees Rocks, Pa. / Montour) walked, freshman infielder Chelsea Siar (Glenshaw, Pa. / Shaler Area) doubled to left center, and a run scored on a Knight error.
With Bryson on cruise control, RMU added a final insurance tally in the seventh. Capp, starting for the first time this season, led off the seventh with a single. After pinch-runner Jessica Tanigawa (Marysville, Wash. / Marysville-Pitchuck) stole second, freshman shortstop Cassie Show (Connellsville, Pa. / Connellsville) drilled a shot into center to score the run.
Bryson didn't allow a hit over the final three frames as she retired the side in order in both the sixth and seventh. She allowed just four hits and struck out six over the complete-game effort.
After a scoreless first in Game Two, RMU again jumped on top early by scoring a trio in the second. Capp singled to right with one out before Siar doubled to the wall in left center. Sophomore Britta Grafton (Jamestown, Pa. / Jamestown) followed with a hard single to right, scoring both runners. Grafton advanced to third on an error and came around to score on a second miscue to make it 3-0.
Jimenez drove in Dubovec with a single run in the third before freshman lefthander Geena Badolato (Mt. Lebanon, Pa. / Mt. Lebanon) worked her way out of trouble in the bottom half. The Knights put their first two on, but the rookie calmly retired the next three hitters to keep Fairleigh Dickinson off the board.
Junior outfielder Katrina Gallagher (Canonsburg, Pa. / Canon McMillan) led off the fourth with a walk and took second on a sacrifice by Patton. With two gone, Dubovec smoked a laser to right center that sent Gallagher home.
RMU added two more in the sixth when Patton and Calderone singled to left and right, respectively, and both then advanced on a passed ball. Jimenez singled a hard ground ball through the left side to push the margin to seven.
Badolato kept the Knights off the board in the seventh to record the shutout, her second of the season. The rookie yielded just four hits, all singles, while striking out four.
Jimenez had previously never driven in more than two runs in a game in her career, but she registered three RBI in each half of the double-dip Sunday as she went 3-for-7 with a walk and six RBI.
Patton matched Calderone by collecting four hits, including her first double of the season, and added two runs scored and a sacrifice. She tallied two multi-hit games and now has six on the season.
Dubovec added three hits and two RBI, Siar drilled two doubles with a walk and a run scored and Capp added two hits, a walk and two runs scored. With her runs batted in, Dubovec moved into a tie for tenth place on the Colonials' all-time RBI list with 73.
Robert Morris combined to hit .323 on the day while Bryson and Badolato held the Knights to a .160 average.
The Colonials have no mid-week games this week but will continue NEC play next weekend by hosting a pair of league doubleheaders. RMU will play Wagner Saturday at 1:00 p.m. before hosting defending league champion Long Island Sunday at Noon.
