Moon Township, Pa. - The Robert Morris University department of athletics honored its student-athletes for the 2010-11 school year Sunday evening at its 17th annual All-Sports Banquet, held at the Charles L. Sewall Center.
Led by master of ceremonies Chris Shovlin, the radio play-by-play voice of Colonial athletics for the last 24 years, Robert Morris presented most valuable player plaques to each of its 23 intercollegiate sports, while eight individuals and one team were also honored, respectively, with the Presidential Scholar-Athlete Award, Most Outstanding Senior Female and Most Outstanding Senior Male Awards, the RMU Athletic Department Appreciation Award, the Susan K. Hofacre Student Fan of the Year Award and the third annual Female and Male Strength & Conditioning Student-Athletes of the Year.
Garnering the Presidential Scholar-Athlete award, presented by Robert Morris University president Dr. Greg Dell'Omo, was senior Amanda Graham (Melbourne, Fla. / Eau Gallie) of the volleyball team. Graham owns a cumulative grade point average of 3.98 as a nuclear medicine technology major and was a four-time All-Northeast Conference selection in volleyball.
The Presidential Scholar-Athlete award was one of four awards that Graham took home during the All-Sports Banquet, as she was also named the Outstanding Senior Female, the Female Strength & Conditioning Student-Athlete of the Year and the Most Valuable Player for volleyball.
The Robert Morris women's cross country team earned the Team GPA award, presented by Robert Morris Assistant Director of Athletics Sean Simmons. The Colonials posted a 3.66 team GPA during the 2009-10 academic year, the highest of RMU's 23 Division I programs.
Taking home the RMU Athletic Department Appreciation Award were Sid and Ellen Zonn. Awarded annually to an individual from outside the athletic department that displays exemplary service, Sid is Vice President and General Counsel at RMU, while his wife, Ellen, is a member of the faculty in the communication skills program. Both are present at many athletic events throughout the course of a season and are ardent supporters of Robert Morris athletics.
For the third time in four years, Matthew Feryus was awarded the Susan K. Hofacre Fan of the Year Award for his constant presence at many RMU sporting events throughout the year. A native of North Huntingdon, Pa., and an actuarial science major, Feryus displays passion unmatched by many of his peers at Colonial sporting events.
Director of Athletics Craig Coleman, M.D., who awarded Feryus with his award, also passed out the honor of Outstanding Senior Female to Graham and Tri-Outstanding Senior Male honors to Trevor Moore (Port Coquitlam, B.C. / Western Reserve Academy) of the lacrosse team, Myles Russ (Boca Raton, Fla. / West Boca) of the football squad and Denny Urban (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Ohio Blue Jackets) of the men's ice hockey team.
The winners of the third annual Strength & Conditioning Student-Athletes of the Year, presented by RMU head strength & conditioning coach Todd Hamer, were awarded to Graham and senior Mike Lovely (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Keystone Oaks) of the football squad.
A total of 26 student-athletes were honored with Most Valuable Player plaques at the 2011 All-Sports Banquet. A look at the list:
