Colonials Take Down Bryant in Wild Finish, 16-15

Box Score Smithfield, R.I. - Junior Kyle Buchanan (Nepean, Ontario / John McCrae) had a career-high six points, including the game-winning goal, as the Robert Morris University men's lacrosse team used a crucial 4-0 run in just 3:03 to take command midway through the fourth quarter and held on for a thrilling 16-15 victory over Bryant Saturday afternoon to earn the first Northeast Conference (NEC) road win in program history.

While Buchanan led the team in points, senior captain Trevor Moore (Port Coquitlam, British Columbia / Western Reserve Academy) had another memorable performance for the Colonials. With his first goal at 5:59 of the opening quarter, Moore, the national leader in goals per game entering the week, broke the RMU single-season goals record that classmate Corbyn Tao-Brambleby (Coquitlam, British Columbia / Western Reserve Academy) had set last season. He finished with at least a hat trick for the fifth consecutive game and has now put home 44 goals in 2011.

Buchanan notched his third-career hat trick and added his fifth-career three-assist game and came through at the most important moments as he factored into the scoring in four of RMU's final five goals, helping the Colonials take the lead for good. With his huge day, he became just the seventh player in program history to surpass the 80 career-point plateau.

Junior Kiel Matisz (Stoney Creek, Ontario / Saltfleet) broke his career high and the team season high by assisting on four goals. He added a score of his own to tally five points in a game for the first time this season and the third instance in his career. Matisz also surpassed the 90 career-point level with his effort Saturday.

The game was nip and tuck throughout as it featured 11 ties, and neither team led by more than two goals except for 1:46 of the fourth quarter.

After a scoreless opening four minutes, both teams went on a scoring spree as they combined for 10 goals in fewer than 10 minutes and ended the first frame knotted, 5-5.

Once RMU had tied the game at five, neither team could then find the net for over eight minutes, the longest stretch of the game. The Bulldogs finally took the game's first multi-goal lead with under eight minutes left in the second, but RMU immediately responded by drilling consecutive scores of its own. Both teams scored once more in the final minutes of the first half to keep the score deadlocked, 8-8, heading into halftime.

Although it was lower scoring, all of the third and the beginning of the fourth quarter featured back-and-forth lead changes with the Bulldogs pulling ahead, 12-11, with 8:48 remaining in regulation.

The Colonials responded instantly as junior Mike Grosz (St. Louis, Mo. / Parkway West) won the ensuing faceoff, and redshirt senior captain Patrick Smith (Westminster, Md. / Westminster) found the twine courtesy of Buchanan exactly 10 seconds after Bryant's go-ahead goal.

Smith's goal started a key 4-0 run for RMU that featured four different goal scorers as junior Casey Abbott (San Jose, Calif. / Bellarmine Prep.), Moore and Buchanan each put one past the goalie to give Robert Morris the game's first three-goal advantage, 15-12 with 5:35 remaining.

The Bulldogs pulled within two about a minute later, but Buchanan reestablished the three-goal edge with 2:35 left.

Bryant then proceeded to make it interesting by scoring twice to cut the margin to one with 31 seconds remaining. However, on the biggest faceoff of the day, Grosz won it and collected the ground ball himself, which allowed the Colonials to run out the rest of the clock.

Grosz's key faceoff win helped him tie his own RMU single-game school record as he scooped 12 ground balls Saturday. Additionally, he also broke the Colonials' single-season record for ground balls and now sits atop the list with 67.

Moore now sits alone in first in program history with his 20 career hat tricks and his 54 points moved him into third place in single-season school history. The reigning NEC Co-Player of the Week extended his consecutive point streak to 43 games and has now tallied multiple points and at least one goal in 14 straight games.

Smith was also a major contributor offensively as he scored four times to move into the top 10 in single-season school history in both points and goals. It marked his eighth-career game with at least four scores and second this season.

Sophomore Tyler Digby (Westminster, British Columbia / New Westminster) finished with two goals and an assist to tally his second-consecutive multi-goal game and his second straight three-point game.

Sophomore Jake Hayes (Calgary, Alberta / Central Memorial) scored a pair of third-quarter goals to record his fourth-consecutive multi-goal game. Hayes has also registered at least one goal in each of the last seven contests in which he has appeared.

Junior Kevin Brownell (Burlington, Ontario / Central) picked up two assists to collect his seventh multi-point game of 2011.

RMU has now scored at least 14 goals in four consecutive games for the first time in school history. Furthermore, with the victory, the Colonials assured themselves of their third-consecutive winning season.

Robert Morris is guaranteed of clinching a spot in the NEC Tournament with a victory in its final regular-season game next Saturday, April 30, as it hosts Sacred Heart at 1:00 p.m. The Colonials could still qualify with a loss if Bryant loses at Mount St. Mary's next Saturday as the three-way tiebreaker would then be determined by goals allowed among tied teams.
